Attempted to get care for my 100% disabled father with extreme ptsd at the ER. Reached out to the VA advocate who went toe to toe with me saying "I'm right here!" While in crisis. One thing the advocates know how to do is escalate a situation. Use caution Dr's have admitted to Me they only work for the VA so they are under an umbrella and can't get sued. When telling the VA advocate that they say "I know".... very sad act all the way around. Maybe if you didn't need 100 armed officers for a small hospital you could hire some more medical staff. Heroes going without care and being disrespected is the biggest slap in the face.
I have been going to the Providence VA since the late 70's and have seen it improve 100%. The staff and care I receive is outstanding. They call me at home to update me on my condition and treatment, who else does that. They save my life and I will be forever grateful.
The Providence VA Medical Center surprises me every time I go there. Let me just say that the parking garage is a huge help because before you'd have to trawl the lot to find a patient that was leaving so you can get a good spot. But the real bright spot to the VA today was the kind hello and good mornings as you walk past the security guard station. All of the security guards were saying hello, good morning, and have a nice day to all who entered and exited the facility. The next beacon was the phlebotomistI didn't get her name, but she is short, brown hair and glasses. I asked her if she could get me in before my 930 appointment, and she said yes. Before I knew it my name was called and she took me to the back got done vials, asked my last name and social and then voila was drawing my blood. She was so professional and courteous that I had to make small talk. She told me she worked upstairs yesterday. I told her she should give a class to anyone looking to learn how to draw blood. Again I'm not sure what her name was, but she deserves a thank you, pat on the back, or at least a cup of coffee for just being who she is. <- fantastic!
The staff are alright, but I've been trying to get treatment for 2 years now and it's becoming deeply frustrating. I understand my condition isn't the simplest but I've had no improvements under their care and I'm starting to feel the need to explore other options.
They do a great job here, especially with the resources they have.
Urgent care/ emergency is awful. Went multiple times 6/8 times over a year+ very sick, to only be sent home. Turns out, it was cancer. Could’ve Cost me my life. Other times sat in waiting area for 3 hours not even being checked in. INTERNET awful, awful, awful. When I was admitted, 3 channels to watch on Tv. Spanish and children stations. I will say, once admitted and being treated for my problems, care was very good and Dr. Was very professional no complaints there. If you need a stay at this hospital, bring a book.
Providence VA Hospital has got to be the worst healthcare system I've ever seen. They give you phone numbers that don't work. They lost my MRI scans twice - I had to go back to the imaging center twice to get them. But this is the worst: I've got cervical spine issues from previous surgeries. One day I had severe spasms, lost control of my car, climbed the curb and nearly hit a group of people. I called the VA as I was scared ... a nurse called me back, I explained the problem and he said the doctor would call me back but no one ever did. I had to get my own primary care doctor and get a referral to a specialist outside of their system. I had asked for a new doctor and they said they'd send me the paperwork ... they never did. If you value you life .... GO ELSEWHERE
My experience with Providence VAMC can be defined with one word- negligence. I was completely conscious and communicating with surgical staff during my last colonoscopy which included polyp removal. I would not trust being put under again by the VA if they can't get such a routine procedure right. For nine years I was prescribed Seroquel, which closed my sinuses completely, leaving me in nightly panic every night for three weeks before I found a medication that relieved those symptoms. I relied on it for nine years, even the the indications stated to use no more than two days in a row. Despite my many complaints, it took seven years for those symptoms to be addressed and I ultimately discovered the cause myself inadvertantly just before preparing to undergo what would have been a useless and invasive surgery on my nose. I felt stupid that it took so long to figure it out, but what does it say about my care givers? I have had Lyme Disease since spring 2020. I have had two 'critical high' positive tests and two that proved to be false negatives. I had and still have a list of chronic and severe symptoms, not one of which has been addressed by the VA. I was tested positive in 9/2022 despite the VA's negative result a couple months earlier. I never received follow-ups after false negative test or after finishing medication, and my first antibiotic dose was half of the standard. After my last dose of VA-prescribed antibiotics, it took three requests and a four page letter to the Office of the Patients' Advocate to get a retest - a false negative test that was not cleared or approved by the FDA and was not conclusive for blood samples but only for plasma samples. I never received a follow up. I still suffer today from internal symptoms. The VA's healthcare isn't suitable for inmates, never mind disabled veterans and former public servants like myself.
The Providence VA is absolutely the BEST Veterans hospital that I have ever been in...
I have had very mixed experiences here. Some amazing staff that listened and really wanted to help. Powerades abusive jerks who took pleasure in triggering a flash back. It's the usual mixed bag of garbage the VA gives you these days. They force the patients to wear masks under COVID protocols. They prevent patients from having companions while receiving care under COVID guidelines. But I did not see a single staff member wearing a mask nor a face mask nor taking any COVID preventive steps on themselves. They prevented my companion from joining me but did not offer me a sign language interpreter even when informed of my profound deafness and that my hearing aids were broken. Yet when I did not respond or I did not understand they ER staff on my second visit became very abusive and did everything they could to trigger a flashback so they could put me in the non-compliant category and get rid of me. if you are a combat veteran and if you have any other option don't go there .
