The psychology major provides a broad-based knowledge of psychological theory and research. Students are introduced to the major areas of psychology, and develop their interpersonal skills, critical thinking, and problem solving. The skills and abilities psychology majors acquire through coursework and out-of-class experiences make them marketable for a wide variety of academic and/or employment options. Many students double-major or minor in psychology finding training in psychology compliments other fields.
What makes us great: The psychology major is flexible. There are only three required classes, and after that students work with an advisor to select classes from various areas, thereby creating a degree specialized to each student’s individual goals. There are also opportunities for experiences outside the classroom, such as independent research, teaching assistant, internship, practicum, or psychology club. But most importantly, we are fun – you will enjoy your education with us.
What the future holds: The department of psychology prepares students to either continue their education in graduate school, or immediately enter the workforce. Although a bachelor's degree in psychology is not a professional degree, career options abound. Employers are looking for people who are flexible, imaginative, good people handlers and can think critically about concepts and society. Psychology majors are prepared to succeed in any career path that involves people—as clients, co-workers, employees, and bosses. Some areas graduates work are; health and human services, teaching, business and industry, community and public relations.
