The Theatre Arts Program at WSU offers a BA in Theatre Arts with concentrations in Performance, Design & Technology, and Theatre Studies.
Since 2007, Westfield State University has offered a Bachelor Arts in Theatre Arts, with concentrations in Performance, Design & Technology, and Theatre Studies.
The Program is committed to preparing students for work in the professional theatre and for graduate study. Its faculty is made up of professional artists and scholars who bring their knowledge of and experience in the professional theatre into the classroom and the studio to educate and to train theatre artists. An emphasis is placed on the creative and learning process and upon mentoring students and providing them with close personal attention.
The bachelor's degree in Theatre Arts is designed to provide students with a fundamentally sound and well-rounded education and training in theatre and its related arts of performance and design; to nurture students' creative, metaphorical, critical, analytical, interpretive, and synthetic thinking and reasoning skills; and to develop their collaborative and interpersonal skills. These various skills will help students succeed in a wide range of careers.
It is the objective of the program to instill in it's students an abiding respect for theatre as an historical and cultural institution; to enhance their appreciation for theatre's significant role in a society's social, political, and cultural life; and to prepare students for the world of the professional theater, for graduate study, and for the demands of the twenty-first century workplace in a global economy.
Westfield State University fosters intellectual curiosity, encourages critical thinking, inspires civic engagement and promotes a global perspective. A public teaching institution offering quality programs in the liberal arts and sciences with complementing professional studies curricula, we are grounded in our founding principles of academic excellence and educating all in a diverse and welcoming community. Westfield State develops the knowledge, skills, and character essential for students to reach their full potential and become responsible leaders in society. We contribute to the economic, social, and cultural vitality of the region.
The mission of the WSU Theatre Arts Progam is to provide an excellent and broadly based academic education in all aspects of theatre, and to provide professional training in the arts of the theatre - performance (acting and directing), design (scenic, costume, lighting, and sound), and playwriting - together with education in theatre technology and theatre management. The goals of the Program are to prepare students to become working professional theatre artists, to become successful participants in graduate programs, and to become "theatre-makers", young artists and technicians capable of producing theatre and starting and running their own theatre companies.
