Quincy Market

Description

Quincy Market is a historic market complex near Faneuil Hall in downtown Boston, Massachusetts. It was constructed in 1824 - 26 and named in honor of Mayor Josiah Quincy, who organized its construction without any tax or debt. The market is a designated National Historic Landmark and Boston Landmark, significant as one of the largest market complexes built in the United States in the first half of the 19th century.HistoryBy the time Boston was incorporated as a city in 1822, downtown commercial demand had grown beyond the capacity of Faneuil Hall. To provide an expansion of shop space Quincy Market was built, as an indoor pavilion of vendor stalls.Designed by Alexander Parris, the main building was built immediately east of and "behind" Faneuil Hall which at the time sat next to the waterfront at the town dock. In an early example of Boston's tendency for territorial growth via landfill, part of the harbor was filled in with dirt to provide a plot of land for the market. The commercial growth spawned by the new marketplace led to the reconstruction or addition of six city streets. From its beginning, the Market was largely used as a produce and foodstuff shopping center, with various grocers of such goods as eggs, cheese, and bread lining its inside walls. Digging performed for expansion of the market in the late 1970s uncovered evidence of animal bones, suggesting that butchering work was done on-site. In addition, street vendors took up space outside the building in its plazas and against its outside walls. Some surviving signs of early food and supplies merchants hang today in the upstairs seating hall.

I was looking for a place to kill four hours of layover in Boston, and Google recommended Quincy Market. I'm glad I took their advice! Quincy Market is a bustling marketplace with a wide variety of shopping and dining options. There are stalls selling everything from fresh produce to souvenirs, and restaurants serving everything from seafood to pizza. There are also plenty of places to sit and enjoy your meal, both inside and outside. I was particularly impressed with the variety of food options available. I was able to find something to my taste, regardless of my dietary restrictions. I also appreciated the fact that there were plenty of affordable options available. In addition to the food and shopping, Quincy Market is also a great place to people-watch. There are always tourists and locals alike milling about, and there's always something interesting to see. Overall, I had a great time at Quincy Market. It was the perfect place to spend a few hours on my layover. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a vibrant and convenient place to shop, dine, and people-watch. **Pros:** * Wide variety of shopping and dining options * Affordable prices * Plenty of places to sit and enjoy your meal * Vibrant atmosphere * Convenient location **Cons:** * Can be crowded, especially on weekends * Some of the food stalls can be overpriced **Overall:** Quincy Market is a great place to spend a few hours on a layover or a day trip. It's a vibrant and convenient spot with something to offer everyone.
Great market, with many food options. There are also souvenir stands on either side outside, so if you are looking to pick something up while visiting this place, it is a good go-to. Historic and beautiful, just always a little crowded.
It feels like a fair ground, I feel like they should be calling out: Get you hot dog here, get your lobster roll here. Lots of different food to be had. On the run. Or take a seat at the many restaurants offering dine in. There is also lots of ice cream and desserts if you are in the mood for that. Usually, there is some entertainment on the outside, musicians, acrobatics or thr likes.
The food selections are not much. Many duplicate of the same ones. Too many lobster shop here. I prefer to see variety of restaurants and food selections. Lots of people during lunch time. Food quality is just ok. Fun to see but not so fun to sit down and eat to enjoy.
So cool to go into this old renovation building and see all the different vendors. Truly something for everyone. We went with a group so the trip included meal vouchers and they have a great selection of food & drinks. Would love to return another time when I have more time to walk around and try some different foods. Such nice old world charm and nostalgia here. It was extremely crowded the day we went but it added to the authenticity for me!
A fabulous tourist attraction in the heart of downtown Boston. This place is bustling, vibrant with so many food options. You see so much crowd, a perfect visit for a city. Try to find a parking close by, if you are driving try to book parking online to save the money.
A short hall full of amazing lunch food, about 30 food vendors competing for your business. Lots of seafood, sandwich, drinks, desserts options with various ethnic options as well, during lunch time it will be busy but it's definitely worth a visit in Boston
I roamed outside the market did not really get inside because it was so full. But we surely have had a great time there. The vibe was so chilling and relaxing and the weather was perfect. Not as hot as NYC and you could feel the gust of wind blowing through you. There was a mini perfomance in front of the building and seemed like everyone really enjoyed it. Great spot for family and young people
Delicious foods! It has different kinds of foods such as Chinese, American, and Mexican foods. You can find great seafood plates here. Also if you are a desert fan, it is a great place for boba, ice cream, and cakes…you can also listen to music from buskers around the market. Different kinds of music and instruments created a special Boston environment!
Food! Was looking for drinks and happened upon this which was perfect! Short distance from Paul Revere’s house and Columbus park. Various cultural items to choose from. Lots of vendors for other fun items just outside too!
