Description

A Short History of Red and his Icehouse
Lewis Hughes “Red” Simmons
Born in Mount Pleasant on November 12, 1937

Red became part of the shrimping and fishing industry very early in his life. The Simmons family dock was built in 1957 to provide a shrimp packing shed for local shrimpers.

By 1970, Red headed the business built upon these same old concrete floors, providing countless tons of the sea’s bounty to many a supper table. In the mid-1970s Red installed a big ice blowing machine to fill the ice holds of the local fleet.

He provided ice and fish packing services until the late 1990s by which time he was ready to retire and start traveling with his wife, Cindy. The couple loved seeing the world and spent many a memorable time together until Red’s untimely ‘Crossing Of The Bar’ in September 2002.

He is truly loved and missed by all. It was Red’s desire that this old fish and ice house be transformed into a public gathering place at the water’s edge where locals and visitors, regardless of their age, wealth or culture, could gather, watch the boats go by and help celebrate, preserve and protect the rich and storied traditions of Shem Creek. This is our aim here at Red’s Icehouse.

God bless Red for his work… and vision!

The food here was wonderful. It ended up being packed which makes sense for a weekend. The wait wasn’t too bad but the food was definitely worth it. Loved the grouper sandwich and the drinks were nice as well. Was hard to hear with so much going on. The staff were all doing great with how busy it was and I’m happy we went hereFood: 5/5
This place was a lot of fun. Everyone knew everybody in here except us the tourists. A guy was there with his dog and everyone knew the dog. A very laid back place with good atmosphere. We got nachos for an appetizer and they were really good. I got scallops. They were good. My wife got crab cakes and they are honestly some of the best. I love crab cakes and they were my favorite I’ve had while here. If I had to complain about anything I would say service was a little slow. Not terrible it was the only thing I noticed. Possibly because everyone here knew each other and was visiting and I can’t complain about that at all. It was nice going to a place where the employees and patrons were all friends. I feel like I was on an episode of Cheers.
We had just arrived in town, after a very long drive. We were looking to enjoy some really good local food, without having to get all dressed up for dinner. We asked one of the locals where to go! He pointed us to Red’s Ice House on Shem Creek. This place was exactly what we hoped it would be. Located right on the creek… the outdoor atmosphere is amazing. Boats everywhere! We enjoyed the greatest shrimp basket we’ve ever had, with drinks at the bar and then went outside for cocktails and people watching! This is a busy, friendly place where you can come in and quickly feel the busy energy here. This was our first time here, but will definitely come back when we visit the Charleston area.
Red’s Ice House is a great place to grab a meal and a cold drink. The Lobster Mac-n-cheese is absolutely delicious. And the crab cakes are loaded with crab. There is an excellent beer selection on tap and in cans/bottles. The service is friendly, and there is ample seating inside and outside.Food: 5/5
I think I may have to try this place again cause it was a very cloudy/rainy day so the outside seating was all covered so that hurt the atmosphere by the water. The service was fine it was pretty dead on a Thursday night everything was just a little slow even though it wasn't busy. The food though.... I swear it was a bad day for the chef, everything was so bland and mediocre. I got the smoked sampler, all the meat tasted like it was smoked a couple of days ago and they just reheated it. I wanna try another day cause there is no way we caught them on a good day seeing the reviews. Also free parking is very limited and shared with another restaurant. Definitely kid friendly though! Kid-friendliness: Coloring menu and crayons Wheelchair accessibility: No stairs
Service is nice and pleasant. Ambiance good, awful music speakers are broken and music selection awful Michael Jackson the entire time to then Elton John. Crab bisque is good very little portion. Crab cakes plates EXTREMELY SALTY so must avoid them. Gosh and chips is a safe choice
Definitely a cool vibe and wish we could’ve stayed longer. They have their own parking area where it’s free but even during the day on a Monday, parking was tough so plan ahead. Place was HUGE! Tons of indoor and outdoor seating thru out the 3-4 buildings/areas and ample bar seating at several spots. Cool railing area outside facing the water where you can sit and watch the boats coming and going. Worth waiting for an open seat. Didn’t grab any food but had a decent looking menu.
The chicken sandwich is a new addition to the menu and you have to get it the Skinny D Way which is Nashville Hot with Pepper Jack cheese. Skinny D is one of the managers. Trust me when I tell you it will be one best chicken sandwiches you can get. To top it off the bar staff is always very pleasant. Especially Ari and Kenny they always go above and beyond to ensure that the customer always has a great experience.
I've been here a couple of times but more recently I came here after leaving Saltwater Cowboys for poor bar service. Best decision ever! The vibe was totally different. Way more relaxed and friendly. The view is better from their bar as well. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. Food was hot and chicken tender. Highly recommend for a casual date night or a drink after work.
Really good food and service! Not a HUGE selection/variety of seafood on the menu, but they have some very tasty items! I ordered the fish n chips and the lobster mac n cheese and it was AMAZING! The mac n cheese was awesome! Definitely get it! Overall it was a good experience, they have big screens to watch the game on, but so far as the food and prices goes, it is overpriced. For the portions you get served to you, they’re in the high side of the value scale, but it’s still worth going there at least once. The restaurant is mainly a bar, but it’s right next to the water which was cool!
