What is Reiki? ¬– L. Reiser
This is a question that I am constantly asked. I have been practicing Reiki for over 30 years and I still do not fully know what Reiki is. When I received my first level attunements, I was told that Reiki was Universal Life Energy. While this is true, it is much more than that.
First let me say that Reiki is a healing art that is not taught, but transmitted from Master to student. The Reiki practitioner heals by placing his hands on specific parts of the client’s body and receives the Reiki energy through the crown of his head, where it travels through the healer to the person being healed. The amount of energy is dependant on the need of the person. The Reiki healer leaves his or her hands on each area until the flow of energy begins to diminish. The healer does not use any of his own energy (or personal Chi/Qui) but is in fact healed also, as the energy flowing through him is limitless. That same energy flows to where it is needed in the healer.
Many clients perceive the Reiki energy as extreme heat radiating from the practitioner’s hands. Sometimes the heat is so intense that it is reminiscent of the heating one receives during a diathermy treatment. After a treatment one feels relaxed, rested and at peace. The energy also feels like unconditional love. I believe that the energy is in fact unconditional love from the source of all creation transferred through the practitioner to the client. The energy is limitless and flows not by conscious choice of the practitioner. Many times I have just met someone socially and could feel the Reiki energy being released to that person through the act of shaking hands.
My first Reiki Master, Ethel Lombardi, taught that the Reiki energy was spirit directed life or love energy. The formal symbol for Reiki stands for Spiritual Healing. Ethel used to say that the “Boys in Blue” directed her. She didn’t mean that they were Policemen but rather that they were heavenly beings. During treatments I sometimes get guidance as to what to say and possible causes for the problems. Once a person’s spirit guide appeared in my mind’s eye and told me of the emotional incidents that caused the client to become chronically ill in a particular area of the body. Many authors have written about the emotional trauma that gets stuck in the cells or organs of the body. A book that comes to mind is “Heal Your Body” by Louise L. Hay and Caroline Myss states similar principles in her writings. If somebody is getting your gall where do you think the problem will manifest? Gall bladder problems are the likely result. These emotions and stronger ones get trapped in the cells and refuse to leave. We can intellectualize their release or more often ignore them, but the cells still retain the pain or trauma. In the course of treatment it is important that people gain insight as to the cause of their illness so that they may make changes in their emotional responses to events in their lives. This is where philosophies such as the Buddhist practice of detachment or the teachings of Don Miguel through his book “The Four Agreements” can be very helpful in overcoming severe illness.
There are three levels or degrees in Reiki. For each level, students receive attunements that tune their Chakras to different potentials of the Reiki energy. These attunements open the Chakras to the Reiki energy but prevent other energy from being incidentally received. Part of the attunement for the first degree consists of energy that helps release the new practitioner from past life karma. There are four separate attunements for Reiki I. These are usually given over a four-day period but can be administered in a single day. The second level consists of only one attunement and therefore only one day is required. Reiki II allows the healer to send the Reiki energy to the client remotely from any distance. It also includes many of the ancient Reiki symbols for healing and purification. The second degree attunement also helps the student to stay on their spiritual path, no matter what that might be, and enhances their natural spiritual gifts of clairvoyance, clairaudience and clairsentience. The third level is the master level and includes exercises for further enhancing the abilities to channel the healing energies as well as instruction on the attunement rituals. The final two Reiki symbols are also given.
The Reiki energy works on the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual levels. The healing energy flows into the healer’s Crown Chakra, travels all the way to the Root Chakra and ascends into the Heart Chakra where it is amplified and travels down the arms and out of the hands. The energy at the Heart Chakra gets amplified at the center of unconditional love and it is this universal life or love energy that is transmitted to the client. As the client absorbs this love energy, they appear to be transformed and may actually glow as their aura increases in brightness and in size.
A complete treatment may last from about 20 minutes to over several hours, depending on the need of the person and their subconscious or spiritual willingness to accept the healing. I believe that some illnesses are also related to karma. There may be a reason someone has to experience the illness in order to balance some past life event or in order to learn something in this incarnation. I worked with a woman several years ago who during the treatment became aware of a past life in which she had died from appendicitis. She realized that in this life she ran to the doctor or emergency room every time she had the least upset stomach. Having realized the cause, she became more conscious of the severity and type of symptoms and acted more appropriately.
In my more than twenty five years as a Reiki healer, I am always amazed at the power and the love that I feel being transferred to the client. Sometimes there are releases of emotion and sometimes there is no emotional release but a healing does take place. Are all of my healings effective? I have treated people who died within hours or days of the treatment. As a healer, I must remember that it is not I doing the healing but the energy that flows through me. Then again, maybe death is the ultimate healing, releasing us from this plane of existence into a higher existence. I had the opportunity to send a remote healing to someone very close to me who was in a coma. During the healing she told me goodbye. I cried as I completed the treatment and within hours she passed. I will never forget the peace and love that I felt coming from her as she released and totally let go.
Lloyd received Reiki I in 1979 from Ethel Lombardi, who was one of the initial 22 Reiki Masters initiated by Mrs. Hawayo Takata. He received Reiki II from Ethel in 1980, and received his Master attunement from Reiki Master Shirley Saathoff in 1996. He has attuned many people in Brevard County, FL and the Washington, DC area to the Reiki energy and facilitates Healing Services at several Churches in central Florida.
