I talked with Bill a proud Navy Veteran, about the history of standardized times established by the railroads. He was very knowledgeable about trains and their history. He told me a railcar could hold 4 times the weight of a semi truck trailer. The set up for the museum was small, with a great amount of detail in each exhibit. There was also a very detailed model train room, which I spent 15 minutes watching the train traverse.
Great little museum! Our kids were slightly too little for it, but there were still plenty of things to keep them occupied. I would probably recommend kids over 5 to enjoy all the exhibits. Price of admission was very reasonable for the experience. The staff was very friendly and attentive!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$6–10
Loved it. Go in and take your time. Allow yourself to meander a bit or get caught up in a conversation with the sweet and knowledgeable guys that run the museum. And when you are done with the historical stuff, go see the model display. I recommended you get eye level with the figures and buildings in the display. There are a lot of little hidden scenes. Some are adorable and some are so silly and funny! I wish I'd taken more pictures but I did get a couple of this really cool quilt on display. I've always been fascinated by "hobo code" language. So, I really loved this quilt. The train museum is the perfect spot for this thoughtful piece of art. Oh, don't forget to go out back and explore the train cars outside!
Our tour guide was great and so informative. My passion for trains could not compare to what I learned. Also got a little info about my hometown in Maryland.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYesPrice for adult entry$6–10
Absolutely loved the Richmond Railroad Museum! Railroad equipment is displayed outside of the museum, which offers great photo opportunities with an ex Seaboard System caboose too! Also home to a model railroad club with a very impressive layout as well. I thoroughly enjoyed talking about railroad history with the helpful personnel available to us.
We really enjoyed all the wonderful displays of historic train-related memorabilia, and the model trains were the icing on the train cake!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot surePrice for adult entry$6–10
I went without knowing what to expected to see. I was very pleasantly surprised by this museum. The guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. The train model room was one of the best ones I have ever seen. It has authentic street seen of a bygone Richmond va with buildings and cars on Broad st trains running around mountains and through cities. The walls are filled with train cars. There are several train cars you can walk through. The museum is well worth seeing. The price is 10.00 for adults and 8.00 for seniors. I bought a family membership and it don't expire until the end of 2022.
Some local railroad history can be found at this little museum. The RF&P was a focal point. There were also a couple miniature train enthusiasts who were working on a 24' by 24' setup.Visited onWeekendWait time30–60 minReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$6–10
We came for a train day event so it was really fun for the little ones riding and jumping the bouncy train, there are also free face paint and balloon twists. Even the adults loved watching the miniature trains and railroads in the museum.
Great place to visit! The gentlemen that maintain the model railroad set-up are knowledgeable and friendly with a side of dad humor which was great to see dealing with curious and "spirited" children. The gentleman that was in the gift shop was also very knowledgeable and patient and took the time to speak with us, in depth, about other railroads in the region. Loved all the artifacts, the videos, the building and the trains and cars outside. Definitely worth the money!
