Richmond Staples Mill Road station

Description

The Richmond Staples Mill Road Amtrak station lies in Dumbarton, Virginia, an unincorporated suburb of Richmond. It is located in Henrico County, about 5 miles (8 km) north of downtown Richmond. The station was designed by David Volkert and Associates, and was built in 1975 as a replacement for Main Street Station in downtown Richmond, which had been heavily damaged by flooding from Hurricane Agnes. The station has an indoor waiting room with restrooms, a snack bar, and a teller window.Nearby modes of transportationThere are pedestrian sidewalks along Staples Mill Road, but the area surrounding the train station is a suburban sprawl area built in the 1970s. A designated line-up area for taxicabs is onsite next to the train station parking lot. GRTC bus service is available (via the #18 Henrico Shuttle map and the #27 Glenside Express map but you must walk east on Staples Mill Road a few blocks for each stop. There are a few rental car agencies within a mile of the station. The parking lot is only accessible from a single driveway, and payment for parking is through a set of self-service ticketing kiosks. Parking at the station is less than $10/day. The parking lot gets very crowded near train arrival and departure times. Plans have been in the works to expand it since at least 2014, but have not been carried out as of the beginning of 2016.

Quiet. Boarded Amtrak for New Jersey. Nice and Comfortable. Coffee and snacks were available. Had to change my train at Philadelphia.. Reached New jersey at odd hours.
Ample parking available. Inside the station are seating areas, clean bathrooms, concession/snack stand, overhead monitor showing train numbers, destination and departure times. Even have a second monitor for streaming announcements like weather, safety reminders, etc. There are double doors to outside seating area with clean benches. Very organized process where passengers are apprised of which trains are coming, which track they will be one and where to go. Love this station better than the huge often crowded and chaotic Amtrak at Union Station in Washington DC!
Currently under renovation indoors visited on October 5th, 2023 and none of the bathrooms are accessible. There are porta-potties outside. You can sit inside but it can be very noisy due to the construction.
Absolute wasteland. You have auxiliary heating units being used to heat the station because you have not updated your HVAC units. Water fountains have been off since 2019. Only hot water in the bathrooms or overpriced bottled water. The station is too small, but not surprised. Why have you let this happen? What do you do with your profits?
Rode train #91 going south on Tues. The Train station was very clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. Greatfull for the security that was visible. No one just hanging around or sleeping in the station. The staff checked my bag and gave my a ride to the coach section of the train.
Traveled to DC for the day to spend quality time with friends & taking Amtrak vs driving was THE BEST travel method for this trip, as it allowed me to rest before and after such a beautiful time. Plus the station is in a nice location, has ample parking and its restrooms are clean. Looking forward to the next trip!
The station itself is nice & the staff are friendly. There’s also PLENTY of parking. However, the Northeast Regional 86 AM needs more order. -if you have luggage, please get out of the commuter’s way. -if you are Business Class, your seat is assigned- please move out of the front of the line as you have zero urgency to board. -if you have children, intend to listen to music, or talk on the phone PLEASE DO NOT SIT IN THE QUIET CAR. This is all pretty basic stuff, but for some reason personnel never express it beforehand. It could really save time and confusion. Board at Main Street Station for all AM trains going north. It’s more seamless & the people have more sense honestly.
I had a great trip from Staples Mill to the Union Station in Washington, DC. The lobby was crowded when I arrived, but soon I was led to the train car I would be seated in. All the workers were patient while I used the lift to get boarded. There was a lot of maneuvering to turn left but I finally accomplished it and parked easily into my space.
Took Amtrak to DC to try and avoid traffic on 95 from Richmond for a 3 day conference. Left Monday late afternoon, returned mid afternoon Thursday. On Monday we had some storms, took more then 4 hrs 30 min for a 105 min train. Now, on way home weather perfect, no track issues, and we are 45 min late. So much for timeliness??.???.
Pretty good train station. Not too far out of the way has a lot of seating but not al of the seats have backs. Has a decent amount of outlets for charging and a nice setup with several picnic tables outside. No steps required to get to the train except to actually get on the train of course. They had an AC unit on inside the station to keep it reasonably cool and that made it comfortable. The smoking section was right out in front od the main doors so if people were coming and going a lot the smoke smell wafted into the main station quite a bit. The bathrooms were decent size and relatively clean. The parking lot is large and has a pay station if you are parking there for a while.
