Riley County was one of the original thirty-six counties established in Kansas on March 8, 1855. It is located in the northeastern part of Kansas and is part of the Flint Hills region. The county comprises 609.77 square miles with a population of 75,394 residents (as of 2013).
The first Riley County Commission moved from (former town) Pawnee to Ogden after county borders were changed and following a vote in 1858 was moved to Manhattan, where it continues to reside to this day.
The development of the Kansas Pacific (Union Pacific) railroad through Manhattan and Ogden in 1866 stimulated growth and developed into the majority of the roads in the county radiating from Manhattan. The majority of the towns in present day Riley County were developed off of various railroad lines.
Riley County is divided into fourteen townships and includes the cities of Leonardville, Manhattan, Ogden, Randolph and Riley, as well as the unincorporated communities of Ashland, Bala, Keats, Rocky Ford and Zeandale. It is home to multiple colleges and universities, the largest being Kansas State University. Fort Riley and Fort Riley Military Reservation also span into Riley County.
