Ringwood Manor

About

Ringwood Manor is the summer mansion of 19th century ironmasters, the Cooper-Hewitt family. The house, a designated National Historic Landmark, contains all original furnishings and is open for guided tours Wednesdays through Sundays.

Description

Ringwood Manor is a National Historic Landmark district, having historical importance spanning from Native Americans occupation through the early 20th century. The surrounding Ramapo Mountains' rich magnetite iron deposits allowed the area to become a major iron supplier and home to a succession of ironmasters from the colonial period through the early 20th century. During the Gilded Age, Ringwood Manor became a large summer estate for partners Peter Cooper and Abram S. Hewitt and their families. In 1938, the house, its contents, and the surrounding property were donated by the family to the State of New Jersey as a museum and a state park. With original historical structures, gardens, and landscapes on 582 acres and extensive historical collections illustrative of family life, community, industry and culture, Ringwood Manor is a unique repository of American history. Today, Ringwood Manor is a central part of Ringwood State Park and administered by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Parks and Forestry. The North Jersey Highlands Historical Society is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit and an Officially Recognized Friends Organization for Ringwood Manor.

Went in February, will go back in summer for tour. Big place, very interesting history of the area. Back again in August 2023, took the tour of the Manor. Excellent, highly recommend far more than I ever expected inside. Fantastic woodwork, funishings, historic pieces.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$6–10
A historical site with lovely grounds. We were unable to explore the inside of the mansion because of our late arrival. The grounds, on the other hand, are stunning, and there is so much to discover. We had a great time. I will most certainly return for the mansion tour.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYesPrice for adult entry$6–10
I absolutely love this place. It's got history, it's got nature, it's got parks if you have young children. It's just a great place to be! And its pet friendly . 6/2023 we did the tour it was $10 per person but it was so worth it. It's absolutely beautiful inside our tour guide was wonderful she was so personable and knowledgeable. Iove love over this place
It is amazing. The home is wonderful and our tour guide was wonderful. The grounds are so great for taking a walk. I love going there just to walk around and our dog loved just wandering and sitting under the trees.Visited onWeekendWait time10–30 minReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$16–20
Beautiful grounds, well maintained and excellent historical tours!
My wife and I had visited here many years ago when dating but never went on the tour in the spectacular estate building itself - just went to enjoy the nature and the timing did not match up when we just went to enjoy the beautiful grounds. We have long been married now and went back when the estate was open with tours and it was A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. First be aware they have somewhat limited hours for the tours and the building is otherwise locked, so check their website before you go to make sure they are open for tours. The tours are guided and you cannot wander through the building alone - you must keep up with the group. Photos are not allowed but they do have postcards is the gift shop which is only open when the building is open. The office to buy tickets are in a different building off to one side. The main building is very misleading even from the photos on their website - there are 40 yes, FORTY bedrooms. The tour takes about 45 minutes. As it is kept 100% as it was when a private home, their is no handicapped access to the upper floors. Additionally, if you need to leave the tour early, an attendant is sent to the group to collect you and escort you out of the building and re-lock the door when you go in for the tour they lock the door behind you. The tours are scheduled. My wife was unable to do the whole tour so we did call back later to see if she could come back to walk through alone and the answer was unfortunately, no. However, they were very attentive and called us back twice to discuss the situation, excellent customer service. Not only is the entire park outside kept immaculately maintained, the inside which is fully furnished with valuable works of art and original and antique furniture, is in magnificent shape. It is a beautiful historic property and very well worth the visit. Very impressive - and very well managed and run. The tour guide is very well first in the history of the place and the history of the family that live there, so there are stories about several of the rooms to give it a personal well-educated touch. There are actually very many bathrooms is well, and that is unheard of back when this building was built. Enjoy!
What a beautiful place to walk around. So much birds and wild life about. We spotted a swan with its swanling?, Tadpoles, all kinds of frogs and turtles, even a snake. The grounds are well maintained and still hint at the opulence of yesteryear.
Beautiful and enchanting wonderful photos and picnics
We took the 1 hour tour of the house and it was just incredible. April is ideal IMO. The home’s history is fascinating and the collection is awe inspiring. The woman who gave the tour is knowledgeable and has great energy. I’ve never been this up close and personal with antiques of this caliber. So happy we came.
