Rockwood Library

Description

The Rockwood Library is a branch of the Multnomah County Library, located in Portland, Oregon. The branch offers the Multnomah County Library catalog of two million books, periodicals and other materials. The library also features a 30-person capacity meeting room for hosting community events at no charge on a first come, first served basis.HistoryIn 1961 the Library Association of Portland examined library use compared to population demographics and recommended the construction of five additional branch buildings. Three buildings would consolidate six "inefficient" branches and one would replace an existing but outdated structure. The Rockwood Library was the only new building in the proposal that would not replace another branch. The LAP announced the purchase of a building site in April 1962. According to the LAP's 1962–63 annual report, "The Rockwood Branch, located about halfway between the Midland and Gresham branches, will serve a growing area with a population of over 20,000, a high percentage of which are children." The building was designed by Stewart, Richardson, Allen and McMath; Neilson Construction and Investment Company served as the contractor. The Rockwood Library was dedicated on April 10, 1963. The 5724ft2 building housed a new collection of 12,000 books with the capacity to hold 20,000 volumes. Helen Gorder became the branch's first librarian.A reading center was established at the library in the late 1980s, to serve the needs of illiterate adults learning to read. The center was funded by a grant from the Library Services and Construction Act, which also paid for a reading center at the Central Library in downtown Portland. Rockwood was selected due to its proximity to the Mt. Hood Literacy Coalition Group, connected with Mt. Hood Community College and the Salvation Army.

You can't go wrong visiting a MCL branch. This is one of the smaller ones but it is still fairly comfortable.
Way too crowded! However the staff was professional and polite...
Despite the sheer amount of people in the library, I was still able to access a computer when I needed it.
Diverse staff at this library. They are all very friendly and ready to help! I love the practical classes language, computer aide and events bike maintenance, healthy eating for the community they host; I think they are pretty consistent. Only concern is the back gate is chained off, so you have to walk around the building.
It was cool, restroom was clean, very few people, bulletin board was neat & updated in lobby
Definitely a smaller library but still really nice! The workers are super nice as well
On the weekends there is a group of loud, very foul-mouthed and extremely disrespectful teenagers that check out some of the laptops to play a game online together. I've told the staff numerous times about the language and volume of the group of teens and the staff has not once enforced the rules laid out by the county as far as consequences of continued disruptive and disrespectful behavior. My family and I have left more often than not because nothing is ever done. The staff is friendly but is not requiring patrons to follow the rules in order to continue being able to use the library. I'm very disappointed in the adult staff that does nothing about this problem with these teenagers, clearly no one cares very much at all about what their employers rules are and shouldn't continue to work if they won't or don't enforce their employers rules and consequences.
Very great books! Nice people!! Very great areas and always have activities for all types of ages for example I got STEAM kits and have Extraordinary things!
Kind a quietly store but ok
Small, looks like a bad preschool classroom. No where comfortable to read. Looks cool from the outside but it's not a enjoyable space. Does have clean and private bathrooms, which is the only perk.
