Ron Tonkin Field

Description

Ron Tonkin Field, originally Hillsboro Ballpark, is a baseball park in Hillsboro in the U.S. state of Oregon. The stadium has a capacity of 4,500 spectators (3,534 seats) and is the home for the Hillsboro Hops, a team in the short season Northwest League. Groundbreaking for the $15.55 million venue was held on September 21, 2012, with the first game played on June 17, 2013.The ballpark is located next to Hillsboro Stadium, a multi-sport stadium owned by the city of Hillsboro, with both stadiums located inside the city's Gordon Faber Recreation Complex. Ron Tonkin Field hosts the only professional baseball team in the Portland metropolitan area. When not in use by the Hops, the stadium is available for other baseball games, as well as soccer and lacrosse.HistoryFollowing the Portland Beavers exit from Portland after the 2010 season when a new ballpark was not built, minor league baseball’s Northwest League approached the city of Hillsboro about relocating a team to the city. Once the Beavers left, the Portland market was the most populous in the country without a professional baseball team. The league and city then started discussions around September 2011 about Hillsboro building a stadium in the city’s Gordon Faber Recreation Complex near Sunset Highway. The city announced in March 2012 that it was in discussions with the Northwest League to bring a Single A team to the city. Milwaukie on the eastern side of the Portland metropolitan area also had plans to build a stadium for a minor league team.

I try to visit new ballparks when possible. This was my first visit to Ron Tonkin Field for a Hops game. It’s a nice ballpark, smaller than other High-A ballparks I’ve been to, but overall a fun environment to catch a game with friends and family. There is a bouncy house and obstacle course for kids and some good food options. My one complaint is the ice cream situation-not good options in my opinion.
This was my first Hops game and it was thoroughly entertaining even though they got crushed 1-12. 3 walks to start and 4th batter hits a grand slam… All the staff very friendly. The facility is clean and there’s tons of parking bring $5 cash. I got comped a ticket but they get you at the concession stand. Spent about $50 on beers, burger, ice cream. It was nearly 100 degrees that day but shady seats on the west side of the park late afternoon were plenty tolerable. It’s a fun way to spend a summer evening outside. Family-friendly!
Seats were comfortable, and the stadium is really a nice place. The concrete must’ve been cleaned recently. The stadium is nice and has a good atmosphere. We enjoyed the game between the Oregon State Beavers vs the University of Portland Pilots. Kind of an uneventful game with the Beavers pulling out the win 4-2. The weather ended up being perfect for a spring game!
We have seen the hops here and love coming here. Good food selection, wide variety of beers to wash it down. I don’t know if there is a bad seat in the house. Places to sit and eat while watching or send and enjoy a beer. If you don’t want the sun in your eyes, sit on the first base side. They have all kinds of seating options, covered, grass, bench. Great friendly staff all willing to help.
I love baseball y’all. I knew it was gonna be a good game when I walked up to the guys warming up with a game of hackeysack. I had to get a hotdog and peanuts with my Fort George beer. It’s gotta be warmer weather for me to go for the Cracker Jacks though. The highlights of my first Hillsboro Hops game involved the center fielder Wilderd Patino’s amazing belly flop catch. It’s also worth noting that catching the opponents’ pitcher balk a run was fun. While I was hanging out with the cops we talked of one player’s walk up song rap about Putin. The couple in front of my seats split season tickets and kept me abreast of the teams inner gossip. Congrats to their new coach. She might appear young but she has the respect of those players and I was impressed by the fans on a chilly, not highly packed game. Barley the mascot was eager to fist bump all through the evening. I’ll definitely go back here as it’s a very nice stadium and not very far away from the crib.
Amazing experience. Super nice ball park and easy to get around. Staff was friendly, made you feel special and accommodating. First time to a HOPS game and looking forward to returning.
The park is super clean and nice. The game was fun to watch and it was good entertainment. The parking wasn't too bad either. My group went on starwars geekend and it was super cool to see people dressed up and supporting starwars. And happy anniversary Hops!
Great Sports Venue with friendly Staff, Family orientated culture, kid Friendly place to enjoy favorite American Pastime of Baseball!
This is a great minor league ballpark. Just about every seat has a good view of the field and the facility is kept clean and in good working order. The beer selection could be better but overall it’s a great place to spend an evening watching the Hops.
We went to a Hops game with our now adult children, and it was a fun, comfortable experience. The ballpark is part of a sports complex, so when we parked, we were under the impression that we were closer to the stadium than we actually were - we ended up walking around a soccer/football field to get to the baseball venue. Once inside, the ballpark reminds me of the spring training facilities I've seen in Arizona - good sightlines from a well laid out set of grandstands. They have a nice selection of concessions, my only disappointment was seeing one restaurant chain present that is known for its support of intolerance. Otherwise, food and drinks showed good quality local representation. Stadium employees were friendly and well trained, doing a good job of keeping people out of the aisles and other fans' sightlines while action was happening. All in all, it was a fun, reasonably priced destination.
