Safe Passage is a year-round preventive after school tennis program for at-risk youth in Los Angeles. The program was created by tennis legend and humanitarian Arthur Ashe in 1995 to "create a Safe Passage for youth into productive adulthood" using tennis
Our mission is to create a "Safe Passage" for youth making the journey into
productive adulthood by using tennis as the vehicle for building self-esteem and
character. Discipline, confidence and independent thinking are stressed.
Ultimately, Arthur Ashe hoped to accomplish with Safe Passage an evergrowing
program that teaches and develops children's interpersonal and social skills
through exposure to tennis. The organization strives to develop skills that will
better prepare children for their future by focusing on decision-making skills,
problem solving, self-esteem, and teamwork.
The development of a curriculum based on sportsmanship, not winning or losing,
is key to maintaining a respect for the self and game.
