Sam Wo Restaurant
"Sam Wo was primarily well-known by San Francisco locals for its "famous ... no-frills, late-night food and its you-get-what-you-get service". In the 1950s Sam Wo was a Beat Generation hangout.Edsel with "abused" customers in 1982.The Sam Wo Restaurant was famed as the workplace of Edsel Ford Fung, often called the "world's rudest, worst, most insulting waiter". Fung would refuse to serve customers whose appearance he disliked and would also harass patrons that complained about mistaken orders. He passed in 1984, Some of his signs on the Washington street eatery remain such as those stating somewhat paradoxically for a Chinese restaurant, including "No Booze ... No Jive, No Coffee, Milk, Soft Drinks, Fortune Cookie"

Couldn't be more pleased. The noodles were ahhhhmazing. Takeout only and a smallish place, but don't let that deter you! We took across the street to the park and watched lion dance me practice, along with lots of locals playing cards. I can't stress enough that the food was so good and worth it! The price was reasonable too!
I've been eating here for years! Never disappoints! Family owned place with excellent food for the price point. The bathrooms need an upgrade, but tolerable for the neighborhood.Recommended dishesDuck Chow Mein
Great small place for amazing Chinese cuisine. Service is nice and very quick. Vegetarian Ma Po Tofu, Chow Mein with three types of meat and rice rolls were amazing! Would definitely recommend for a quick and delicious meal. Portions are big, so you can easily share.Recommended dishesMA PO Tofu over Rice, BBQ Pork Rice Noodle RollDietary restrictions accommodatedVegetarian, Vegan, Gluten freeRecommendation for vegetariansHighly recommendVegetarian offeringsClearly labeled vegetarian dishes
So no trip to SF is complete without a trip to Sam Wo. This hole in the wall Chinese spot in Chinatown has been here forever and I know why. I’ve been here over a dozen times and this place never disappoints. You can eat in the restaurant, but I always get my order to go. It’s by far the best Chinese food I’ve ever had in the States. I always get the bbq pork fried rice, the bbq pork roll this roll is amazing and the hot spicy mustard is a must. and this time I got the three shredded meats with stir fried noodles. Yes, it was all for me!
Restaurant is one of the good hole in the walls. Service was a bit slow, yet being a good hole in the wall and seems to be famous with write-ups. It was quite busy with phone rigs, takeout pickup, and walk-in customers. Unfortunately, I was not offered or told about the dining room upstairs. Now I know. Next visit.. UP STAIRS I GO. food was good quality. I'm a toughie critic from Manhattan. Takes alot to blow my skirt up. Sam Wo is definitely a go again. Employees were lovely.
Tasty food that hit the spot and good service! We shared the duck fried rice, chicken rice roll, beef fried noodles and wonton soup. We were obsessed with the duck fried rice! So delicious! The chicken rice roll was very refreshing and nothing like I’ve ever tried before. Just be careful of the sauce-suggest a dab vs a dunk bc it’s got horse radish in it! Noodles and soup were also solid choices.
Really solid food. Was a big fan of the BBQ Pork Noodle Roll. I've always had it hot with a sweet sauce but this place has a unique version of the roll that was cold, and served with spicy mustard. I have a soft spot for places with actually good spicy mustard, and this place has definitely been added to my list. Their congee was also really flavorful. Just some solid good classic cantonese food plus the unique roll, not expensive, and our server was also very nice!
It was full house but we didn't have to wait too long for a party of 8! The porridge was the best. Goes well with the Chinese Donut !Food: 4/5
Always very busy. Everything tastes great. Food is authentic. Service is good even though they are very busy.
This place has history and rightfully so. I haven’t been to their original location but this new one has been around the last 7 years or so. I recalled it opening late but pandemic changed everything I guess. Anyway, we needed a quick bite so here we are. We ordered their milk tea hot cuz it’s cold, the three shredded meat chow mein, house chow fun, and salt & pepper chicken. My girlfriend really enjoyed the chow mein so that’s a plus. However, it came with a lot of bean sprouts. They should’ve filled it with more noodles instead. The chow fun wasn’t prepped the way I personally prefer it, but we all have different taste buds and all. The chicken could’ve been a little crispier and more flavorful. Half of it felt like hot meat while I was eating them. Pricing is reasonable. Service is fast. Food was hot. Just what we needed on a cold chilly day! Do keep in mind that the food is kinda greasy which may upset some stomach .
