San Gabriel Library

About

Located in the City of San Gabriel; part of LA County Library

Description

History
The San Gabriel Library was founded in 1915 and moved to its present site in 1967. Soon after, the Friends of the Library was founded. A historical mural was painted in 1984 by award winning artist Robert Freeman, a descendant of the Sioux and Luiseno tribes. The mural portrays life at the San Gabriel Mission showing the padre, a vaquero rounding up cattle and the Gabrielino Indians. The mural serves as the focal point of the library’s spacious open reading rooms.

In 2008, the library underwent an extensive refurbishment and now features a full service elevator for easy access to the upstairs meeting room.

Collection
The library has adult and children's books and an extensive audiovisual collection including music CDs, audiobooks, videocassettes and DVDs. The library also carries current magazines and newspapers plus a Family Place Collection and large print collection. The library features a growing collection of Chinese Language materials with emphasis on language learning and citizenship. A generous grant has funded an increase in materials featuring visual arts, home arts, and popular culture plus homework materials for children in grades k-12. The teen collection is extensive. Local users of the library have access to the County of Los Angeles’ entire collection of more than 7,000,000 items through our automated request system.

Services
Services available to our customers include public access Internet computers, a photocopier, and a public meeting room. The library also provides information and readers' advisory services, and children's programs featuring toddler storytime, a Homework Center, and summer reading program for kids and teens. The Library also features a Family Place for toddlers and parents.

Recently won an award. Beautiful, modern, quiet, but not too quiet. There is a homework area for people to teach others. Children's section, adults section, teen section, computers, copies, music, movies, up to 50 items per library card. This is such a great resource.
Okay. I'll update the review. For whatever reason, the speed jumped from the worst in town to the pretty good, in, say, a half hour. Hence, I am changing the 1-star review to a 4-star review. --- The worst, I mean literally, not figuratively, the worst internet upload speed I’ve ever seen. Wow... Never seen any slower speed at any Starbucks They’re pretty bad in the Greater LA area than this... I won’t even compare it to other public libraries where I’ve been to, let alone LA County libraries... Check out my other reviews. You’ll see what I mean.
New head librarian will not allow our book club to meet once a month for 1 hour in the upstairs room. This book club has been ongoing for over ten years. We now meet in someone’s home or the park. All former head librarians were not only members of our book club but leaders.
To me, the library is supposed to be a quite place for people to read or to study. But this library is just not a quite place. I've been going to this library every Friday and Saturday after dropping off my daughter to her art school for over a year and I've never experience any quite environment in this library. I've never see any of the staff members work here lowering their voice while talking. And the people visit the library have their phone ring on at regular volume. No one seems to lower their voice when talking. The kids screaming in there. I've never seen any staff member tried to warn or stop the visitors when they make noises or let their phone rings loud. This library has becoming a Starbucks now.
Came in to renew my passport since Monrovia community Center has uneducated staff in this department. Jeff was amazing at clarifying what was needed and what was not. Contrary to my previous experience at MCC my birth certificate wasn't needed to renew after my 5 year gap. I was in and out within 18 minutes. Fast and friendly. Thank you again Jeff for your time and candor. All is appreciated.
Noah was very helpful, but the place reeks! The floors were stained with dirt and grime, and it was hard to focus on reading because of the screaming children.
Good place . Helpful staff. Clean bathroom. Good activities for kids always happening, but parking is always full and you will find kids screaming most of the time. Overall a good place and nice environment.
It's too loud there and there's too many kids. Not a good place to study. There is an OK selection of books though. Whenever I go there the computers are often full. Staff seemed irritated whenever I ask for something or need help finding a book. Don't go there if it's for something important. I would only use this library as a back up plan for assignments, books, studies, etc.
I think this is a really nice library big and very clean. It’s quiet
I love coming here great people and great little events the Library does for kids in the summer is nice
