San Jacinto Battle Ship Monument

I can't say I'm much of a history buff so it was pretty much what you see is what you get. We strolled around the small museum on the ground floor but didn't go up the elevators, which you can do for a small fee. It was closed for maintenance when we were there. It's probably not worth going out of your way to see but it's a nice, short detour among other tourist stops in Houston if you're close by. The weather was perfect when we went and I was surprised to learn that it's actually taller than the Washington Monument in D.C.

For anyone interested in Texas history this stop is a must. Go to the top and get an overall view of the grounds where the battle happened. Watch a great 35 min movie and visit the museum. It’s a great experience to visit this place, it has couple of small parks along with trails to explore the historic spot and nature together. There is no ticket for entry to the park and to the trials but there is an 12$ ticket for the museum and to go to the top of the tower , along with a small show about the battle. There are posters and wall engraving with quotes and lot of information about the battle, ferries, and past.

I learned so much about the great state of Texas at this site. We spent 3 hours here and still only scratched the surface of what there was to see and learn. I want to come back here with my kids and my grandkids to help them learn about what happened here and why it matters today. The Obelisk is taller than the Washington Monument in DC just proving once again that everything is bigger in Texas lol. The World War I battleship the USS Texas was an amazing sight to see as well. I have been coming to San Jacinto my enter life and it is where my love of history was laid. I was last here in July when it was 105 degrees outside, and despite that I loved being able to drive around the battleground and see the markers of where everything took place. The museum had a new exhibit detailing the construction of the monument as well as walking through Texas History and figures who were at the battle. The film shown in the theater was excellent and I highly recommend taking the time to watch it. Whether you are new to Texas History or a passionate Texan, I highly recommend coming to San Jacinto. Going to miss seeing the Battleship here but there are great opportunities to explore the decisive battle that won Texas independence.

Had a good and educational time here. Was disappointed they didn't have all 6 flags flying while we were there. We really liked how they described what led up to the battle inscribed on the monument. Loved checking out the battleground of one of the most historic battles for Texas. Having specific locations marked by historical stone markers and signs helped lay out the entire battle wonderfully.
