San Jacinto Peak

Description

San Jacinto Peak is the highest peak of the San Jacinto Mountains, and of Riverside County, California. It lies within Mount San Jacinto State Park. Naturalist John Muir wrote of San Jacinto Peak, "The view from San Jacinto is the most sublime spectacle to be found anywhere on this earth!"San Jacinto Peak is one of the most topographically prominent peaks in the United States. It is ranked sixth among peaks in the 48 contiguous states. According to John W. Robinson and Bruce D. Risher, authors of The San Jacintos, "No Southern California hiker worth his salt would miss climbing 'San Jack' at least once."Known for its spectacular north escarpment, the peak rises 10,000ft above San Gorgonio Pass. It plays host to the famous Cactus to Clouds Trail.GeographyTo the east, the peak towers over the city of Palm Springs (elevation 479 ft; 146 m); to the west, it borders the mountain community of Idyllwild (elevation 5,413 ft; 1,650 m). The peak is also frequently called Mount San Jacinto. The steep escarpment of its north face, above Snow Creek, climbs over 10000ft in 7mi. This is one of the largest gains in elevation over such a small horizontal distance in the contiguous United States.

We did the trail starting from the tram. We took the tram at 8am. Started the trail at around 8:12am. The moving time for the trail is a little bit more than 5 hours. It is more than 17km in total. The ranger said it should take about 6 hours on average. The trail is not hard and the whether was cloudy in the morning, so our way up was not hot but the way down was hot though. Very rocky in the last 1-2 miles. Very windy and cold at the top I hope I had a warm coat but I didn’t bring it. We saw two dears and several mushrooms. The first 1/4 of the trail was in a forest landscape which is very beautiful. I bet it would be even more beautiful in the spring when there is water. Next time I will try another trail in this mountain.
You need a permit to hike to the peak permit is free. Carry atleast 1 gallon water. The hike is challenging. Be prepared mentally. Try to start at 6 am. The views are spectacular towards the peak. The hike is almost covered with trees which means you are not exposed to the sun which makes this hike doable. There are no water filling stations so carry your own water. You will find fellow hikers of all age groups on this trail.
I did hiking from the Tramway station to the peak, about 12 miles. It was hard to me. You may have headache or nausea due to high altitude. The mountain station is at 8516 ft and the peak is 10834 ft. Wow. I never have been that high before. In my case, breathing was hard in every step. Still lots of snow on the trail but tolerable. If you are beginner in hiking like me, better prepare well. No internet available. Fill up a paper at ranger station. Put blue paper in a box and keep white one. Return the white paper when you come down. Good luck
Finally went on the tram to Mount San Jacinto and loved it. Tram ride is fast, efficient and steep! Did a 20km hike to the peak and the views were stunning. Lots of different hiking options up there. Perfect place to visit and explore, especially in the middle of summer!
Really well paved trail and beautiful hike through forests up to the summit. Bit challenging just given length of in and out. Definitely plan with enough water.
I was extremely impressed with the magnificent view. I've never been so high up in elevation except in a plane. Going up to the small town there is very curvy roads so be extra careful. The locals drive really fast so pull over and let them pass. There is several look out spots where I was able to get good pictures. We visited the small town on the otherside of the mountain which was very cool. Lots of shops and restaurants. The town itself is amazing, the locals are very nice and it reminds me of something out of a movie. Like it was where a movie was filmed. The climate is totally different up there. It's colder than the desert below and there are trees everywhere which was a nice change of scenery from the desert. Highly recommend that people make the drive up there it's so worth it.
I hosted a 12.6 mile out and back hike on May 16, 2021 to Mount San Jacinto. The parking is directly across from the trailhead, and you do have to register for the hike and this is also free. The first 3 miles were a tough ascent, then it becomes a more level of a climb, but don't take those words easy, it's still a 4500 ft climb total over 6.3 miles. The trail was in great condition and the views at the peak are worth the climb. There were plenty of switchbacks, all either covered in dirt or bedded rocks, so there really isn't much sliding on the trail. To get to the actual summit, you will have to climb the boulders up, and once on top the wind was brutal today, snap a few pics, then seek shelter from the wind. We ate lunch in from of the stone cabin, and the was no wind to interfere with us, so this made it a pleasant lunch. Again, this is not a beginner hike, get a few shorter and less steep hikes under your belt and you'll be ready for this one. The weather and views were spectacular, we were above the clouds. Enjoy your hiking.
