Well maintained county park with plenty of parking. There is a $6 fee for the parking, but that often means available spots well into late morning. I hiked using the Hazelnut trail and the Valley View trail for a 6 mile loop. The Hazelnut trail rose about 700 ft in elevation to 1000ft. The trail was surrounded by thick brush and some trees with clusters here and there. At no point was the trail too difficult. I would rate it as moderate with plenty of switchbacks. There are various nice views of the surrounding valleys and off to the Pacific. There was not a great deal of foot traffic and I never saw any horses or biking but those are allowed. The ranger at the gate was super friendly and offered me a map for navigation. I would recommend this park for families and picnics. The loop I hiked only took me a little over 2 hours, but set aside 3 just in case. At the end I saw 5 deer having a picnic of their own which was a nice cap to a great morning.
Very well-maintained park that is worth visiting in all seasons. On a sunny winter day, it can be surprisingly warm on the Hazelnut trail 4 mile loop with about 900 feet of elevation gain. In summer, fog and clouds can give dramatic lighting effects on the green hills. This is an interesting place to see how invasive eucalyptus trees can be, crowding out the native coastal plants in some areas.
My first hike of 2023 ! Parking was $6. We picked hazelnut trail. And started about 11am. Trailhead starts from the parking lot and loops to return at the other side of the lodge. There were a lot of mushrooms so we stopped quite a bit. I logged 10,000+ steps for 2+ hours hike. Great day! I didn’t need to wear my windbreaker.
Hidden in the back of the Linda Mar area of Pacifica, San Pedro Valley County Park is not only the best place from which to begin your hike up Montara Mountain; it's also a great hiking destination in itself. We'd highlight Brooks Falls Trail 2.4mi & 640ft elevation and a route combining Hazelnut Trail and Valley View Trail 5.4 mi & 1,224 feet elevation. There's also several other hiking trails that we show on our map including small nature walk along Plaskon Nature Trail. Picnic spots area also scattered throughout the park.
Good place for group picnics and hiking. $6 per car entrance. Clean flushing toilets with running water. We took the Hazelnut trail today which is their longest trail. It is mark as 3.7 mile trail which ends on a fire road and add another 0.75 mile give or take from the end of the trail going back to the parking lot. From the trailhead, it is an uphill switchback hike for about 1.9 mile and downhill after that. On a sunny day, you can view the valley and the coast. Hydrate before you go if you don’t want to carry water. There are lots of wildflowers and a few benches along the trail to enjoy the view. The trail is wide and have shades.
The best of both worlds, where the mountains meets the ocean. Absolutely stunning, but a lot of the trails does include elevation gain. So do your research and be prepared. They are paper park brochures, which I recommend to pick up because it’s easy to get confused with the trails without it. Just take your time to pair the trailhead numbers with the map and there are multiple different routes to take. Enjoy!
Quiet and clean park with easy to moderate trails. I often see deers, rabbits and quails there.
This park has a clean bathroom, well maintained/marked trails, and friendly staff. I had a great experience today hiking the Montara mountain trail and went to the top. It was cold, windy and foggy! I'll definitely be back.
Very diverse county park on Pacifica. A handful of very diverse trails, from short and easy to climbing 1600 feet in three miles up to Montara Mountain. A couple large lawns and picnic areas. Flora and fauna are abundant. Great for solo hikes or outdoor time with the kids. Check website/call for seasonal hours, trail/facility closures. $6 parking fee.
If you want to see a lot of green on a hike when the bay area is brown due to draught, this is the place to visit. One of my favorite park to hike at. $6 entry fee for parking and there are a lot of spots. There is also generous amount of space for picnicking.
