The SMMNHA supports interpretation and education in our Coastal State Parks; Point Mugu and Leo Carrillo State Parks and Point Dume Nature Preserve.
The Santa Monica Mountains Natural History Association has proven itself to be a valuable ally to the parks, visitors and staff at Leo Carrillo State Park, Point Mugu State Park and Point Dume State Preserve. For more information about the association and its many activities, or to become a member, contact the Association.
The mission of the Santa Monica Mountains Natural History Association is “to promote the educational and interpretive activities of the State Park System, principally in the West Malibu Sector of the Angeles District, to produce and make available to park visitors, by sale or free distribution suitable interpretive and educational materials…to acquire and display material or objects pertaining to the cultural history or natural history of the area for the purpose of adding them to the interpretive collections of the State Park System…to give all possible aid to the State of California in conserving, developing, and interpreting the areas of the State Park System for the benefit of the public.”
Some of the many accomplishments of the SMMNHA include the development of two nature centers, one in Leo Carrillo State Park and one in Point Mugu State Park. These nature centers are open to the public and are staffed by volunteers. The nature centers provide information, displays and educational items for sale to the visiting public. Programs such as Junior Rangers, nature hikes and cleanups are provided for the visiting public and supported by the SMM Natural History Association.
