Satulah Mountain Historic District

Description

The Satulah Mountain Historic District is a residential historic district in Highlands, North Carolina. It is located in the southwestern part of the city, bounded on the north and west by Walhalla Road, on the east by properties on Satulah Road. The area is located on the slopes of Satulah Mountain, and was most significantly developed in the early decades of the 20th century, although the earliest development took place not long after Highlands was founded in 1875. There are a number of log houses, and rustic styling using log and fieldstone elements is common in the area. Many houses have Craftsman features. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

There were several paths, so took us a little longer to find the right one but it was worth it : so beautiful and easy to hike!
Quick hike with a huge payoff. Stunning views of highlands ect. Don’t let the private drive signs discourage you. There is a place to park at the trail head and the trail is part of the Highlands Cashiers land Trust.
Great views and a decent workout. Half the hike is on asphalt through nice neighborhoods, but the canopy that opens onto the the vista is nice. Worth the hike.
It appears to be a popular hike up from Highlands. But, it's steep in places for some folks, mostly asphalt thru a residential area to a small parking area near top... then hiking trails another 500yds or so to the top. Views are 280+ degrees... pretty good, but not super spectacular, at about 4650ft elevation, but I still prefer Whiteside Mtn hike and views.
Satulah Mountain is an easy hike up an old dirt road coming from one direction or a pretty intense hike up a paved road through a neighborhood from the other direction great leg workout or through Brushy Face Preserve 2.7 miles, difficult. Whichever way, when you get to the top the view was worth the walk! Check out this link for specific directions on the easy path and the Brushy Face path. If you pack in you wine remember to pack it out! and time it just right, you can have happy hour and watch the sun set on the west side of the mountain. Covi takes his human up sometimes for a bit of wine tasting.
Most of the trail is a road walk, but the view at the top makes it worth it!
They say no parking and a dead end just go up with your car there's a small parking place there... The ppl who live there dont own the road. Every one can put a sign of a private road. Just used worley rd till the end and you will see the start of the trail. They are very rude posting those signs there... they dont owe the road.
This is a moderately tough hike up as there is no legal parking despite what some reviews below say. The road and the turn around at the end are privately owned, posted as such, and one can be towed. Heed the signs. They are building a new parking lot where folks can legally park but it is quite a ways from the top. Having said that, the views are quite good though the hike is mostly on a road going past houses. It gets more pleasant the last half mile or so though it can be wet and muddy so wear appropriate shoes. Other hikes like Whiteside Mountain offer more payoff for a bit less effort. Elevation change from town is about 700 feet or perhaps a bit more.
JUST BEAUTIFUL I parked past the dead end sign, where the road turns to gravel, I think at the end of fourth Street. The paved road, through the neighborhood, makes it easy. The steep incline, makes it less easy! A lot of it’s shaded. The houses are beautiful. It’s well worth the walk! When I got to the top, I went straight through the cul-de-sac. I did not go left. I think I saw the confederate out look just before the summit. The views were absolutely stunning. After the first set of outlooks, I continued on a little ways and there were more outlooks. I will return!
This is an amazing place that has been in the family for decades. The only reason im giving 4 stars is that in the years since I have last been able to visit the family home, at least twice the amount of housing has been stuffed onto the mountain. Don't get me wrong, its still a peaceful place. However, it is a lot less quiet and a lot of what used to be un-touched peeks at nature now have houses in the forefront. Id still highly recommend that anyone who can visit, does so as soon as possible..
