Saugatuck Dunes State Park

Description

Saugatuck Dunes State Park is a 1,120 acre Michigan state park. It is located on Lake Michigan between Saugatuck and Holland in Allegan County, Michigan. This day-use park features 14 mi of hiking trails through scenic, stabilized and wooded sand dunes. It also has two miles of Lake Michigan beachfront, located a mile from the parking lot and requiring a semi-strenuous walk to get there. A picnic area is present, but no camping is allowed. A state park permit is required for entry.Near this park is the state-owned Felt Mansion, which was built by inventor of the comptometer, Dorr E. Felt, in 1928. This was the Felt family's summer home until 1949, when it was sold to the St. Augustine Seminary and used as housing for young students, and later on, for cloistered nuns. In the 1970s, this building was purchased by the state of Michigan and was used as a state police post, with nearby buildings serving as a prison. The whole mansion is undergoing a restoration project.

This place is awesome! We went in early November and it was super. There are many species of trees and plants here and a lovely forested area until you get to the beach. This area had beautiful moss and mushrooms, beech and maple trees too. Once on the beach the sand is soft and I would recommend walking along the beach to get some peace and quiet There's a secret yellow sandcastle bucket. You should find that and make a castle.
Loved this place. The different lengths in trails that brought you to different ends of the beach made it so you got to choose the trail you wanted to walk to get there. It was a good hike and a beautiful one too. Then the view at the end was just beautiful. Spent the day at the beach, then walked the trail back, which was a little harder to do, being tired from the beach. But I can say it was well worth it. Looking forward to going again and bringing friends.
Beautiful trails and beach! Dog friendly on leash. You will need the recreation pass to enter, available on site for those who haven't already purchased one. Vault toilets in the parking area. None on the beach, so plan accordingly bc it's a long walk back! Restrooms: Vault toilets only at parking area. Dog-friendliness: On leash
Stopped by on a road trip during sunset. Beach is clean and trails are well maintained. 10 minute walk to the beach. Area has good signage to keep you on track. It’s a nice quick stop for the view. $12 entry fee for private vehicles Restrooms: Clean enough outhouse. One at the beach, a couple in the parking lot area Dog-friendliness: Dog friendly. All dogs must be leashed
Beautiful walk through a forest to get to the beach, about 15 minutes walk. Once at the beach, you will be on a hill. The beach is clean and the sand does not have rocks. Water is shallow quite far out.
This place is the bomb!!! I prefer to think of it as a lovely wooded area with a beach attached. To me, the beach is too small and often crowded. The real beauty is on and off the trails. Explore the wooded dunes and enjoy some neature. The restrooms and water situation is kind of the downfall. They have relatively nice pit toilets, a water pump, and picnic tables at the north parking lot, but just a port-a-John by the felt mansion. I have yet to find a stream to fill up water, so if you bring a filter you’ll be wrestling with the lake to re-fill on the trail. PS if you see a sign that says ‘This is not a marked trail!’ That means it’s a shortcut. You’ll see tracks from the rangers’ side by side on it, and it will have a matching sign at the other end.
Beautiful path to this beach, very pretty. But it's definitely a more difficult walk for the older generation. Pretty good size hills, some rocks on the path along with stumps / tree roots to walk around. Restrooms: I seen restrooms at the parking lot but I didn't see any at the beach. Dog-friendliness: People were running around with their dogs all over the place on leashes. Picnic area: Parking lot had benchs and a water pump for rinsing off feet or water for your dog's.
We took our three dogs and two kids 6&9 here on the blue trail south and it was absolutely stunning! My 6 yo said the views by the beach was absolutely worth the hike and that he had "the best day ever!". Make sure to bring snacks and water for tiny humans! But absolutely a great way to spend a few hours together as a family! Restrooms: None along the way. Dog-friendliness: Even my corgi was able to walk the whole way! Picnic area: None along the way.
I make the 2.5 hour drive from Chicago to visit this lovely park. The trails are much more interesting than what we get in Chicago, and the beach front is amazing. I've always been able to get a spot to myself. I think having to walk 10-15 minutes to the beach weeds people out. This is my happy place! I bought a recreation pass after my 1st visit
Nice trails to walk with someone or your pups. About a 1 mile walk to a beautiful beach, so make sure you use the bathroom and you have everything before you start. Clean, soft sand and it's a small dune to go down before you hit the water. Remember, you have to climb up to leave. Dog friendly on a 6ft leash. Dog-friendliness: Dog friendly on a 6ft leash Picnic area: Tables and grills
