This was so much fun for everyone, and not just for the kids. We all loved every minute there. They had an entire room for hands on experiments for kids, like egg drops and rocket launches. There was also a large nature exhibit which was full of taxidermy and ecosystem facts. A big highlight of the museum was the planetarium with hourly shows on black holes and stars. They also had hourly electricity shows featuring tesla coils and static electricity. There really isn't a way to put this place into words, so the only way to experience it is to see it for yourself.
Definitely worth stopping at if you're in Des Moines. It's a good overall science museum. I've visited tons of Science Museums across the US and I'd say this one is middle of the road compared to the others I've visited. Definitely more geared towards kids compared to other science museums. I did love the star lab/planetarium show they had. For such a big building I expected more exhibits.
The Science Center is great for all ages! I'm pretty sure every time I've come to Des Moines, I've come here. There's always new things, like this time new giant dinosaurs and fossils, and an updated space section. But plenty of classics remain, like an area to practice milking a cow, a huge room of various physics interactions like paper rockets, a giant Lego architecture room, and a nature walk room, where they were doing the local news weather broadcast live with kids from the room. Super cool.
We ended up staying the entire day. We would probably still be there, but they closed. My 14 year old and my 6 year old spent hours making rockets. We especially loved the shows. Cannot recommended this place enough!Visited onWeekendWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedYes
This is a location I wish I could visit more often with my son. It's fun, interactive and provides plenty of creative freedom in terms of activities. As an avid astrophotographer I especially enjoyed the IMAX dome theater with a presentation of the night sky. There are plenty of activities to keep one occupied for an entire day and there should still be something to enjoy next time. Edit: August, 2023 - Came home to family again this year and took my daughter this time around to the Science Center and her favorite section was the rocket building and rocket launch area. My son and I enjoyed our tour of the night sky inside the planetarium. We look forward to our next visit.
What a fun place! The exhibits were all well done and highly interactive, with a thought of making science accessible to all ages!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$6–10
Incredible! This is the best children's museum I've we've been to. Our kids loved it!
We enjoyed coming to visit the science center. We loved the Lego section! The kids really enjoyed making the little rockets and launching them!

Great for the family. Interesting on hands activities, from learning about space, and dinosaurs. To Tour around Toddler Town, we’re a little kids up to five years old can play at a tiny grocery store. I think it’s ever changing so great to check it out when in town also, don’t forget there is a discount, or free admission, if you are a member museums, in your own hometown.
