A core value of Scout’s Honor is the belief that community outreach programs work best through collaboration to meet common goals.
Scout’s Honor Pet Food Pantry is a supplemental service offered to private, USDA, and faith-based food pantries to provide senior citizens with nutritional pet foods, pet nutrition education to the public, and emergency relief to pet owners suffering catastrophic loss. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity seeking to better the lives of West Virginia senior citizens and their pets.
Scout’s Honor is a service provided to low-resource senior citizens with companion animals (a domesticated animal who lives alongside their owner whose emotional, physical, and behavioral needs can be reasonably met in a domestic environment such as cats and dogs). A senior will be determined to be low-resource based upon their relationship with existing food pantries-- if they meet the need requirements of the partner organization, they are eligible for our services.
Seniors in southern West Virginia are often left with little companionship outside of whatever pets they may have. The relationship and daily interaction with companion animals have both anecdotal and scientifically-backed evidence in contributing to the quality of life in senior populations. Helping to provide the day-to-day care for these animals directly impacts the lives of both pet and owner. Scout’s Honor makes these provisions so that seniors can better enjoy and benefit from their time with their pets and allow them to more efficiently manage their own food resources. By providing nutritionally sound sustenance, risk of diet-related disease is minimized and quality of life is maximized, for both pet and owner.
Our mission is to reduce the immediate hunger needs of pets to improve the long-range quality of life of their owners.
