I went there after a fall. I came in by ambulance because I couldn't stand up. They did xrays, and the doctor came back and said he read the xrays and nothing was broken. He said my knee was just bruised and offered me crutches and told me to take over the counter pain meds. After I was discharged it took me a full hour to get up and get into the car. The pain was excruciating. I decided to look at the app in the car to see why it hurt so bad and according to the xray report my leg is clearly fractured on the weight bearing bone. I called for an explanation and still haven't received a call back after 5 days. I went home to NJ and my local hospital admitted me and did a CT scan to confirm the break. They then moved me to a rehab for physical therapy so I can learn to transfer to a wheelchair and use a walker. I was told by the relatives I was visiting that this is a good hospital, so I am very surprised by my treatment.
I was in the waiting room during a serious medical procedure for my mother, and while I was anxiously waiting during her surgery an armed security guard approached me and aggressively barked at me with a pointed finger to adjust my mask so that it covered my nose. He then said threateningly “I’m not going to ask you again.” While he was doing that multiple hospital personnel walked past sipping coffee from thermoses with masks around their chins.
On Tuesday December 6th I was told by urgent care to seek medical help at the Hospital. My pulse since Monday had been in the 100s I was told by three sets of doctors I needed to be seen in the ER definitely after urgent care did my EKG and said it was concerning. Excuse me for not remembering the doctors name at Martha Jefferson that day in the ER but I found him rather rude and had no bed side manner. He made me feel as if I wasted everyone’s time. I told him what the other doctors told me to do. Once I was moved to a more comfortable setting I was placed right across from the nurses stations are. My doctor at that point was talking to someone I clearly heard my name first and last and he began to tell the person about my case. He told them my story sounded ridiculous and that I could just be discharged. He even took my pulse one last time which was still at 111 and he brushed everything off by saying I had an inappropriate heart beat and that’s it and discharged me. After speaking with to other medical professionals I found that Martha should have never discharged me without actually figuring out what was happening definitely with not being able to get my heart rate down. It’s Thursday now and my heart rate still sits at 111-120 resting. Amber Voos
Probably the worst service over ever experienced in an ER. This place is the emptiest I've ever seen it and we have people waiting 4 or 5 hours to be seen. This feels like the pandemic all over again with how they're struggling. For the sake of you or your loved ones do not bring them here anywhere else in better. If I could give it a negative rating I would because this place and the staff are useless. Not even worth the tax dollars spent on it.
12/15/22 I went to the ER w/stroke symptoms. woke up @ 5am w/ numbness in parts of my body & began to have total numbness in my entire left side of my body and face, trouble seeing & felt confusion, memory problems, difficulty thinking & finding the right words & speaking them, I felt my body become very heavy/dead weight almost & extremely tired when I would sit back down. Over a 2/3 hour period my symptoms increasingly got worse to the point I woke my husband & debated calling an ambulance. After 4 hours passed symptoms seemed to ease but the numbness in my face was still there along with the thought process & voicing things the way I wanted, as well as developing a sudden headache & my mouth feeling as though I had been to the dentist. This was not the first time I had these symptoms the first time they were this severe and was told over & over again by my husband & family to go to the ER, but this episode actually scared me & had me feeling very uncomfortable. I have several stroke risk factors & believed this is what was happening to me, a mini stroke at least. I was told years ago by one of my doctors they believed I had one. However during my visit to the ER at Martha Jefferson, after waiting an hour or so to see anyone, I was given a urine test to check for a uti & pregnancy, so the doctor claimed. I was asked what medications I was on or had taken or if I had “taken anything”. I informed the doctor of my medications & what I had & had not been taking of those medications, adhd medication had been taken the prior morning & that was all. I was given an ekg & a drug test. My ekg came different than a previous one but I was not aware until after checking my MyChart. I was discharged quickly once my test results for the ekg, urine & blood work returned. The doctor stated all my labs & test results came back normal but I tested positive for “Meth” which was incorrect & very unprofessional for a doctor to not use the correct medical term. I tested positive for “amphetamines” which is my adderall for adhd, I did NOT test positive for “methamphetamines” as the doctor said. I was sent home with outrageous discharge instructions stating to not take any drugs & a couple papers on “amphetamine use disorder”! I have been prescribed adderall since I was a young child & had the doctor asked to see my prescription she would see that it has lasted me a long time, this last prescription has lasted me MONTHS actually because my doctors office closed suddenly & I know I won’t be able to get it refilled until I get into another appointment months from now at a new office. There is way more left than should be according to the directions on my prescription because I do not take it all the time which would contradict her theory on having a use disorder for it! So because I have adhd & take a prescription that was prescribed to me by my doctor which she was made aware of prior to asking for a urine sample, I was blown off & sent home with loads of nonsense & LIES on my after visit summary such as “patient denies headache/neck pain/vision disturbances ect” all things that I actually told the doctor were issues I was having! Discharge also states that I said I was feeling better with a 2/10 when no one asked how I was feeling, EVER. It also states that I left with a family member however I was there alone & left alone. After visit summary also stated everything was discussed with clear instructions on reasons to come back & that I had no questions. Nothing was discussed & I did have questions that were not answered! I was in the ER in Sept w/severe migraine, neck pain, feeling out of it & strange numbness. At that time I was given a ct scan where thyroid nodules & scattered lymph nodes were seen along with a Left Fetal type PCA and given strict instructions to follow up with a pcp asap. My discharge summary even stated “ischemic stroke” as a possibility!!!! This visit I did not have a Ct/mri nor did the doctor ever PHYSICALLY check me over! My husband wants to me go back to a different ER! M.J. is great for prenatal but not the ER!!!
My mother was here after her stroke and did craniotomy surgery. They only allowed one visitor. Needless to say this was the most anxiety ridden worst month of my life. The head nurse just “forgot” to give my mom nausea med she threw up everywhere the head nurse wasnt even changing her I was. Another night nurse was Literally gagging her with a teeth cleaning kit. During clean up/bed changes i asked to help support her head due to craniotomy Surgery and they would rather hurt my mother than let me help. The nurses in the icu are HORRIBLE!!!!!!! Hope to never come here again.
I had the best experience at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital. A team of Healthcare professionals discovered I had gallstones and I needed my gallbladder removed. Surgery was fast and recovery is going great. Dr. Spinelli was knowledgeable, kind, funny, and put my mind to ease. My nurse, CNA and every other employee were so kind. I will choose MJH for my Healthcare in the future!!
I went into the ER for a hip injury. X-rays we’re taken and I was told there was no fracture or dislocation. The next day, walking on level ground, I felt the hip shift. I had suffered a now displaced hip fracture. The Risk Management Team at MJH was horrible and unsympathetic. Patient Advocacy has yet to reach out to me. I have filed a complaint with the Virginia Board of Medicine and am speaking with attorneys as other hip surgeons are able to clearly identify the femur fracture in the x-ray taken at MJH. This is not the first bad experience with their ER. I would highly recommend steering clear as you do have far better options in the Charlottesville area.
The wait was well over 2 hrs people seemed to be waiting everywhere not very organized..I have always received great care from the care team...it's hard to believe martha jefferson has been on pantops for 12 yrs until you look around at the worn out furnishings and the dirty dusty equipment and floors totally unexpected especially for a hospital. Come on MJH
The ER is a joke. It always seems quite with very few patients but takes them 1+ hrs to get a doctor in a room. For all that you’re better off going to UVA.
