Seward County Historical Society

About

The Seward County Historical Society serves Seward County, KS and runs the Coronado Museum, Dorothy’s House and the Land of OZ.

Description

The Seward County Historical Society started in 1961 by four men Robert Baughman, Fred Hill, Louis Eyman and Oliver Brown to discover and preserve the history of the Seward County, Kansas area before the opportunity passed. S.S. Rogers settled here in mid-1880 with water from his well that he gave to travelers for free. The travelers would respond that is “Mighty Liberal of you,” hence the name of the town.

The Coronado Museum was named after Coronado’s troop of 36 soldiers passed through the area in 1541.

Dorothy’s House was built in 1907 and donated to the Seward County Historical Society. Volunteers moved the house to its present location on the grounds. It has been carefully restored and furnished to replicate the house shown in the 1939 movie “Wizard of OZ,” reproducing the warmth of the farmhouse where Dorothy realized that, “There’s no place like home.” Former Kansas governor John Carlin recognized the house as the official home of Dorothy Gale in 1981.

The Land of OZ is a 5,000 square foot animated “Land of Oz” where Dorothy will guide you through her adventure while meeting Munchkins, a Scarecrow, Tin Man, a Cowardly Lion, and trying to avoid a Wicked Witch.

Join Dorothy today to experience a guided tour of Dorothy’s House and the Land of Oz, where you will see unique memorabilia, including the actual model of the home that was used in the tornado scene in the 1939 movie. We look forward to seeing you!
