Shoppers Square is a local mall located on the corner of Plumb Ln. and S. Virginia St. There are an eclectic array of shops ranging from Sheplers to CVS.
Opening in 1964, Shoppers Square has been a staple in the Reno community, beginning as an 82,000 square foot single level, open-air shopping mall. Since its opening, the business has undergone numerous renovations and now stands as a two story retail center with 200,000 square feet of space.
Prior to becoming a shopping center the property was an attraction in the outskirts of Reno. Originally the land was a 140 acre ranch owned by William Morton who operated it as a racetrack and fairgrounds. It was purchased by Anthony and Joseph Casazza who farmed the property. In 1925 when Anthony married, he bought his brother Joseph’s share in the property and farmed it for many years.
At the end of World War II Anthony decided to sub-divide the property for home sites and by the early sixties only 8 acres remained vacant at the intersection of South Virginia, Wells Avenue and what is now Plumb Lane. The family decided to build a shopping center. Ground was broken in 1963 and in 1964 the first stores were opened. The entire family was involved in the day to day operation of the center and in 1998 Anthony’s son, Ralph Casazza, became sole owner. Ralph passed away a year and a half ago, but the center remains in the family with Ralph’s son, Rick Casazza, who currently manages the property.
Today the mall has over 30 businesses, including Marshalls, CVS, and Tuesday Morning, as well as several other locally owned businesses, including My Favorite Muffin, Flashback Toys, and Soccer City. Today Shoppers Square serves a unique alternative to the standard shopping mall experience with diverse store options and a strong mix of locally owned businesses.
