About

Shouldice Hospital, the world leader in hernia repair since 1945

Description

Our History: A Tradition of Excellence

Shouldice® Hospital was established in 1945 by Dr. Edward Earle Shouldice (1890-1965), inventor of the Shouldice repair. Dr. Shouldice developed his innovative technique during World War II, to help young men who were unable to enlist in the military because of their hernias. His unique repair method improved surgical results and reduced recovery time, quickly restoring the young recruits to physical fitness for military training.

As news of Dr. Shouldice’s success spread, there was a growing demand for hernia surgery. But doctors and hospital space were scarce after the war and wait times for surgery were long. Dr. Shouldice responded to the problem by founding his own hospital.
Founding Shouldice Hospital

Shouldice Hospital opened with a single operating room and a waiting list of 300 eager patients. Working with only a nurse, secretary and cook for support, Dr. Shouldice repaired two hernias a day. Requests for his remarkable surgery grew and the hospital soon expanded, adding more staff and more buildings. In 1953, Dr. Shouldice purchased a beautiful country estate in Thornhill, Ontario, just minutes from downtown, which eventually became the hospital’s new home.
A world-class institution

Today, two generations later, Shouldice Hospital has grown far beyond its early beginnings to become the world’s leading centre of excellence for hernia repair. Dr. Shouldice’s son, Dr. Byrnes Shouldice, and daughter, Mrs. W.H. Urquhart continued their father’s legacy. Dr. Byrnes Shouldice followed in his father’s footsteps as a surgeon at Shouldice in 1961 and is currently President and Chairman of the Board. Mrs. W.H. Urquhart has been involved in management as Vice President and director on the board since the hospital was founded, along with her husband, the late William Urquhart, President and Chairman of the board until his demise in 1998. With the support and guidance of the founder’s son and daughter and their respective families, Shouldice has developed into a modern, 89-bed facility, with five specialized operating suites, an expert team of hernia surgeons and nurses, and a dedicated staff of about 150 people, all working to meet the needs of patients with hernias.
Looking to the future

Ideally suited to deliver exceptional results for hernia patients, Shouldice continues to reflect the progressive outlook and traditional values of its founder. Our 99.5% success rate in hernia surgery has long been the benchmark for medical professionals internationally. Shouldice’s reputation has been built on an holistic approach to patient care and its philosophy continues to emphasize the well-being of mind and body as the key to a healthy recovery. Over the years, skilled and innovative surgeons have refined the Shouldice repair, ensuring that at Shouldice Hospital, surgical procedures meet the highest standards in medical care.

For well over half a century, the Shouldice name has been synonymous with excellence in hernia repair and we are committed to maintaining that tradition of quality and service in the years ahead.

I attended this hospital as a walk in patient for an examination. There are only a limited number of walk ins allowed each day. Check their website for how many each day and be sure to arrive early. I arrived before 6 am to assure that I got in that day. Staff were excellent from the security guard to the Drs. and everyone in between. Facility was beautiful, clean and large. There is paid parking on site. I would suggest you register and fill out the online questionnaire beforehand to speed up your process. Thanks you to all!
I did a lot of research and traveled from outside Canada to go to Shouldice and I highly recommend it. The first day is a check-in and examination by the surgeon, which was relatively quick. Then you are taken to your room which you share with one other person. There are two floors with dedicated nurses on each floor. I questioned whether I needed to stay so long after surgery check-in on a Wednesday for Thursday surgery and leave on Sunday, but it is so worth it. Unlike most hospitals, this is all they do - hernia surgery. And all of the patients around you are all going through the same surgery. Every day in the morning, a surgeon checks on you along with nurses. This is so valuable to ensure no issues, to ask any questions and to discuss with other patients what is “normal” or not normal in terms of pain or swelling. The surgeon and operating staff were excellent and very comforting and the nurses were top notch. The day of surgery, they deliver lunch and dinner to your room excellent food and also help you out of bed showing how to do it to minimize pain and supervise you on your first walk. They also help the following morning by helping you out of bed and taking you through some exercises. This assistance and encouragement of mobility after surgery is so critical to a quicker recovery. I know if I was at home, I would be much more hesitant to walk around due to pain. The other patients were great company as we chatted, played cards or watched hockey and ate home-cooked meals in the cafeteria. You are served 3 meals plus an evening snack and have access to coffee, tea and juice at any time. They ask on the first day about any allergies or just preferences and they are quick to accommodate: vegetarian, no fish, no red meat, non-spicy… anything. They are great. I’m now 8-weeks post-op and I’m back to working out, jogging and all the exercises I did pre-op. I’m still only using lighter weights to be safe but there is zero pain in the area. I highly recommend and I’m very glad I chose Shouldice for their surgery expertise and very caring staff.
Had surgery here in 1996 for an inguinal hernia on my left side. Everything went well and it's still holding up to my lifestyle. So when I got another on my right side I knew where to go. The experience is much as I remembered, lots of nice people going through the same thing. I know that getting accepted can take time, let's face it, the health system is a little slow and bogged down currently, but it's worth it. Once my day arrived, I proceeded to the registration area for my stay. The nurse and family doctor I saw were both friendly and welcoming. I wish my own family doctor was this nice! Next morning is being shaved for surgery, down to pleasant waiting room, and then in to surgery. I was aware of being helped off table to wheelchair to be returned to my room. Some wake up in bed, unaware of how they got there! There are many friendly staff members, nurses on my floor all seemed very helpful. There are many, Maryam, Primrose, Cherylnice perfume!, Sandy are names I remember, there were many more, names I forgot, or never heard. My doctor sadly his name escapes me, unfortunately, 'cause he was very nice visited me each morning after the operation to remove some clips and check on me. Food was good, certainly better and more varied than typical hospital food. 3 meals a day and a snack time in the evening, in a large dining room downstairs, lots of time to meet people. Wonderful grounds to sit or wander around on when you're up to it, or you can wander around inside, nice lounge on each floor, TV, pool tables if you're up to it, board games, chess if you like, nice place to sit and read or chat with others if you just want to get out of your room. It's like an old fashioned resort that happens to do surgery, if you're generally a friendly, patient person you'll probably enjoy yourself, surgery and all!
Actually leaving today and i can not say enough about my stay. The doctors are friendly and profensiinal. The nurses however are fantastic and so nice. They really make a visit more comfortable. My hats off to the kitchen staff, food is great and plentiful, you are never hungry. The cleaning staff is too noch and on top of things and so friendly too. Thank you so much for everything.
Posting for my husband: Great work! My surgery was fabulous. My recovery has been perfect! Everyone was kind and caring. Premises are pristine inside and out. Most important to me, they saved me 2 yrs of waiting in pain for the public system!
I am submitting this review on behalf of my 85-year-old father, who underwent surgery at Shouldice 2.5 months ago. My father had a wonderful experience during his stay. Despite feeling quite nervous upon admission, he found great comfort as soon as he settled into his room. The entire team, from the surgeon to the front desk, treated him with exceptional kindness and care. Understanding the communication challenges my father faced, they took the time to provide him with detailed written instructions. They patiently addressed all his inquiries and ensured that his concerns were promptly resolved. Today, more than two months after the surgery, my father is doing remarkably well. He has no complaints, only praise for the hospital and its staff.
Well I was just released from the Shouldice for an Inguinal hernia repair. I HIGHLY recommend this hospital. The staff are wonderful and caring. The food is very well done for a hospital and their technique is world class. Thank you Dr Wong for a terrific job. The experience is also enhanced by the fact that you are there with others who have the same medical issue as you do and everyone helps you to understand and anticipate what to expect. This is especially helpful as any surgery can be a little frightening. There is simply nothing to worry about! World class facility!
Initial inguinal hernia surgery was performed in 2017 and although not fun, I was pleased with the outcome. Last year I began experiencing significant discomfort again and an ultra sound revealed a recurrence. Although disappointed at this, I was more than happy to renew my faith in Shouldice and returned to them for a consultation to see what my options were. I'd assumed they were the experts as they did the initial procedure which was advertised the result being stronger than it ever was. I knew the wait times were long but I'd forgotten how long....after driving an hour and a half and waiting 4hrs I had to leave. Still not deterred thinking that this was only an inconvenience telling myself I should have been more prepared and remembered I returned the following week ensuring I'd set aside the whole day for a consultation. My initial physician I saw was absolutely fantastic. She stated that they don't rely too much on ultrasound results which I knew but after examining me, she confirmed that yes she could in fact feel the hernia. She was very patient and thorough in explain what my options were and that 1/1000 repairs do unfortunately reemerge. She said that she felt it was treatable however and I was a candidate to have it re repaired. I left a little bummed that I had to go through that horrible procedure again but quite happy and relieved that it was treatable and impressed at how thorough that consultation was regardless of the wait time. Unfortunately, this is where I become very disappointed in Shouldice. I finally receive an admission/surgery date and complete the admission instructions they send you, book time away from work and arrive on my admission date. I pay, see the nurse and patiently wait to see the preop surgeon as per their procedure which also took the whole day. After finally getting in to see him, I found him to be quite rude flipping through my file that he didn't believe I had a hernia. He said he knew the surgeon that did the procedure and he does "good work". He had zero bedside manner and i found to be a tad arrogant. If he misheard me it was a response of "what?". On numerous occasions. One example of many but the general energy in the room. That did subside after I made it quite evident I don't get spoken to that way. He went on to say that even if it was a hernia doing another surgery could be too risky due to the scar tissue from the initial procedure. He brought another doctor into the room as well. It felt more like it was self preservation mode from Shouldice at this point rather than a presadmission consultation. As I left the room he called it a "red herring". I can't express enough how dismissed I left there feeling. Not only a lack of care but support on what my options could be. Especially since this is a result of their initial procedure. I requested the consultation notes be forwarded to my family physician so I can follow up with next steps...........never received. I had a summer trip planned to the states with my child that I cancelled as insurance would in no way cover a hospital stay for a diagnosed condition if something happened. Although inconvenienced and disappointed, never did I feel upset until then. I just chalked it up to life sucks sometimes and I get to do this again. Instead i left that hospital feeling a strong sense of patient care well as accountability. Now more and more discomfort and a second ultra sound confirms again the hernia recurrence. After reading some similar reviews perhaps it's time for collaboration and accountability.
A very positive experience. The doctors were caring, the nursing staff was attentive and the food was very good. Met a lot of nice people also there for hernia surgery. Shouldice should be your first choice for your hernia repair.
This experience was the absolute best medical experience I've had in my life. Shouldice is a well oiled machine from the assessment to surgery and recovery. The staff seemed to enjoy there work and did a great job making me comfortable during my stay. I would recommend Shouldice to anyone. Two weeks after my surgery and i'm feeling great. Thank you!
