Our hiking group enjoyed the trails. A thick coat of mulch covered the walking area of the trail, and the bridges ensured dry feet. In a few places, there were roots that needed to be navagated. For the most part the trail is level and we did come across a portable bathroom. The parking lot is large and well maintained.
Recently we too a walk through the Shu Swamp Nature Preserve. It is located off of the Frost Mill road and it is comprised of a low-laying nature preserve with a swamp that is surrounded by thick forest and damp wet land. This area is covered in little streams that criss cross the floor of the forest and eventually lead to the swamp! The Shu Swamp Nature Preserve also shares a border with the Humes Preserve making it ideal to mix and match the trails! The Trail: The Shu Swamp trail cuts through the forest floor and follow meandering streams and creeks all the way to the Shu Swamp itself! There is a nice viewing point there that overlooks the Swamp. The trails that snake through Shu Swamp range from very easy flat trails that follow to a slight challenge if weather conditions are not favourable. The weather on the day that we visited was hot and humid and it definitely added a slight difficulty to the trail but nothing too hard. The surface of the path in Shu Swamp is made up of compacted dirt in sections and other sections of the path are made up of a layer of wood chippings which seem to have been added recently! The trails in Shue Swamp arewell worn so it is very easy to follow however you could get a little turned around while you are in there. Wildlife: The Shu Swamp Nature Preserve was full of bird life on the day that we were there. At the pond area there is a platform and it was from here where we seen a number of large fish in the water as well as a wild turtle! We also seen fish swimming in the streams that are spread out through Shu Swamp. Clothing/Footwear: I recommend having good footwear even for this light hike however, a good pair of shoes or sneakers would be good enough for the trails here and light layers with bug spray during the Summer months. You might need warmer layers later in the year for the colder winter months and more sturdy ankle support footwear. Carpark: There is a carpark however, I am not entirely sure how big or small it is as we parked in the Humes Preserve carpark. Note: We did not run into any issues walking through here during the day in July however, the trails through Shu Swamp could have a lot of mosquitoes in the evenings or later in the year. I would suggest that you wear plenty of bug spray and bring extra in case you need more. Another thing to note is that there was a lot of Poison Ivy dotted along the trails so watch out! Overall Opinion: I highly recommend swinging by the Shu Swamp Nature Preserve for a walk. Its a great amenity in the local area to take in some nature!
Natural area with lots of small paths through wetlands. Dogs not permitted, as it is a bird sanctuary. A good place to walk quietly and enjoy the surroundings.
It's a nice small nature preserve. I visited on a Sunday in a very nice fall day. Good spacious parking available. A map of the place available. If you look on the map there's two trails you can walk and then alot of short cuts. Area is muddy, there's pondsand sitting areas. Wear appropriate attire and be aware of your surroundings. No pets allowed. Truly enjoyed the serenity here. It took about an hour to see everything. No restrooms available. Restrooms: Not available Dog-friendliness: No dogs allowed Picnic area: There's benches and there's areas you can do a picnik.
We intended to take a short hike through the Shu Swamp's woods. From the slightly-raised lookout, the lake was a serene break. However, we eventually got lost. We saw no trail markers on any trees and found ourselves far away, at the rear area of the Japanese gardens. We were told there that a number of people from Shu and the surrounding parks get lost. We were grateful that we were offered a ride back to the parking area.
A great park with two main trail loops. There is a large parking lot with plenty of space at the entrance. Both trails provide excellent views, with the red trail passing next to the lake and the train tracks, and the blue trail going deeper into the woods. Some parts of the trail do live up to the name and are pretty muddy, so bring appropriate footwear and clean up before getting back into the car!
The preserve is much larger than expected. The blue trail is my favorite, as it parallels a brook, so you are always near water. A sign lets you know when you are leaving the preserve, where dogs are not allowed. The reverse of the sign indicates when you are entering the North Shore Wildlife Sanctuary, where dogs on leash are permitted.
A beautiful trail we found out of no where m there was literally no one around which made the experience very thrilling. We went around 5 pm am hiked the trail for around 1.5 hrs.. it's a big trail , we couldn't cover entirely but definitely going back again to see some birds.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
It's a free, small nature preserve. I visited on Sunday, pretty quiet. If you look on the map there's two trails you can walk and then alot of short cuts. Area is muddy, obviously its a swamp...wear sneakers and bring bug spray if you want to walk the trails. No bike, rollerblades, pets etc...I kinda enjoyed it. It wasn't out of the way for me but if you want a long walk this isn't it. It took about an hour to see everything, just two big ponds.
One of the most beautiful swamp I have been to. It is small but you don’t feel that you are in New York once you stepped into it. The hostas all along the path are well maintained and much appreciated.
