Holy cow, do not miss this museum, and be sure to take a tour because it includes the base itself. Extremely interesting and worth stopping for even if your destination is not Missoula. It is all free, so I suggest you buy some thing or donate some bucks. It was not clear, which of the numerous buildings that were part of the same complex was where one should enter. Some signage pointing the way to the museum would have been great.
My Dad was a smoke jumper in the '60s. It made this experience even more fascinating and enjoyable. Great personal tour!!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitPrice for adult entryFree
The young lady who gave our group's tour did an excellent job!! She was very knowledgeable and shared her own experience as both her parents have been jumpers there. We'll be back. Thx!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitPrice for adult entryFree
Awesome tour experience!! My daughter who's in high school and I found it super interesting. Our guide was top-notch with her explanations, having had both her parents as smokejumpers. It takes place at he actual training facility right next to the airport so you get to see the real life equipment, test areas, locker rooms, etc. Super educational and we came away with tremendous respect for what the smokejumpers do. We'd highly recommend this tour!!!
Very cool museum. We didn’t catch a tour but it was nice to walk around the property and see the history of Smoke Jumping. Since it is next door to the airport we stopped in after being on a plane for two and a half hours the kids loved stretching their legs.
My first impression was really poor. It was not clear right away where to enter. There were lots of weeds in front of the building which looked terrible. The are no guided tours right now, even though their website says otherwise. It is a very small building. As a former wildland firefighter, I didn't really need the tour, but it would have been nice. There is a short informative video and a replica of the inside of a lookout. The only other thing to see is the gear smokejumpers use. At least it was free to enter.
Once you turn off of the road/West Broadway Street there isn't signage to indicate where you should park or where the museum is located. My friends and I walked around and did locate the museum, in spite of no signs, only to find that it was closed. Please note: We looked at the website and the information there said that it was open daily for tours. If you plan to visit this museum I highly recommend that you call beforehand. To the staff at the museum- please update your website, and please post signage to indicate where to park and the museum location.
Was really looking forward to this tour, small or otherwise. Unfortunately, we arrived 30 min before the posted tour time on a Sat and it was locked up tighter than a drum. The hours posted on the door and on the phone message did not state that they were closed on weekends. And the Google search results stated that they were open on Sat and Sun I have since reported that change. A fireman in another building told us is that the visitors center is in fact closed on weekends. It's really too bad because there were are 5 other cars that arrived and left when it became clear that the center was not going to open. So if you plan to visit, take your chances and hope that it is open since the online search results indicate that they are closed Mon through Wed too.
Was impresed by skills and professional atitude those guys have. They realy jump into the fire and start fighting it. The gear and equipment presentation was outstending. One more time: they are real deal and the name 'Smoke Jumpers'the best descibe what they do. Good luck and thank You for your service.
Presentation from an experienced fire fighter was very informative and well delivered. Can see museum exhibits as well as actual workplace of smoke jumpers.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
