In 1833, Frederic Ozanam, a 20 year-old student at Sorbonne University in Paris, together with several of his friends, began to serve the poor. They took as their patron the French Saint and champion of the poor, Vincent de Paul. From these simple beginnings, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has grown into a worldwide organization with some 900,000 members in over 130 countries. By the grace of God, Ozanam's dream of "embracing the whole world in a network of love" has become a reality.
Members of the Society are known as "Vincentians.". Believing in the words of Jesus - that whatever is done for the least of their brothers and sisters is done for Christ (Matthew 25:40) Vincentians personally reach out to the poor and needy. These men and women are charity and compassion in action, finding opportunities to serve the needs of families facing financial or other problems right in their own communities. They are neighbors serving neighbors in the name of Christ.
Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person to person service to those who are needy and suffering....
Vincentians witness God's love by embracing all works of charity and justice; and collaborate with other people of good will in relieving need and addressing its causes making no distinction in those served.
