Located in the historic Cushing's Point House at Bug Light Park, South Portland, Maine
South Portland Historical Society operates a museum on the grounds of Bug Light Park. The 9-acre scenic park was built on the site of the former WWII Liberty shipyards, overlooks Portland Harbor and the Casco Bay islands, and is home to the Portland Breakwater Lighthouse (aka Bug Light), the Liberty Ship Memorial, a public boat launch, and offers walking paths.
The historical society collects and preserves items of historical significance, offers educational programming, and operates a museum and research center.
"South Portland Historical Society was founded in 1962. Its mission is to collect and preserve local history and provide education for all ages. The Society operates a museum next to a lighthouse in scenic Bug Light Park on the South Portland waterfront, on the site that was formerly home to two massive shipyards that built Ocean and Liberty ships during WWII. For the 2022 season, the museum is open Monday through Saturday, from May 7 to October 30, from 10am to 4pm; it is also open on weekends in November and December.
