"South Portland Historical Society was founded in 1962. Its mission is to collect and preserve local history and provide education for all ages. The Society operates a museum next to a lighthouse in scenic Bug Light Park on the South Portland waterfront, on the site that was formerly home to two massive shipyards that built Ocean and Liberty ships during WWII. For the 2022 season, the museum is open Monday through Saturday, from May 7 to October 30, from 10am to 4pm; it is also open on weekends in November and December. Staff was amazing! Really good information and assistance! The museum has its own parking and there are a lot of really cute items in the gift shop area. Very cozy location.
This museum, known as the South Portland Historical Museum and alternatively as the Cushing's Point Museum, is staffed by local volunteers. There's a small gift shop and several displays. I learned more about South Portland than I ever would have suspected from the volunteer in the store. It's a nice local stop. Check their website for hours and events.
Friendly staff with a wealth of local historical information. I highly recommend visiting the museum. Admission is free, donations encouraged. Don't let this small gem of history disappear.
The museum is small yet very informative. The staff is great. They are welcoming and knowledgeable. The surrounding area is beautiful.
This is a great little museum! Free admission and a cute gift shop stocked with local products.
The gentleman who was running the museum was fantastic. He explained alot about the history where we were standing. Cudos to him and the Historical society.
Lovely, informative spot to visit. Happy I stopped in on my short trip to the area.
