The Cushing's Point Museum is located on the grounds of Bug Light Park. The 9-acre scenic park, overlooking Casco Bay and its islands, is also home to Portland Breakwater Lighthouse and the Shipyard Memorial.
Features the history of the WWII Liberty shipyards in South Portland, local lighthouses and their keepers, South Portland's role as a mustering-in and training location for Civil War regiments from Maine, and other history themes. Free admission. Gift shop on site. Open daily May through October and on weekends in November and December. Home of the South Portland Historical Society.
DIRECTIONS: Take Broadway east to the ocean, turn left onto Breakwater Drive, then right on Madison Street that leads directly into the park.
BY TRAIN: Take AMTRAK Downeaster to Portland, Maine. From the AMTRAK/bus station, take METRO bus number 5 inbound to downtown Portland. Request a free transfer when you get on the bus. Get off METRO 5 at Monument Square in Portland. At the same bus stop, TRANSFER to South Portland Bus Service Route 21 (says “Route 21 - Willard Square and SMCC” on the sign on the bus). Get off at first stop after SMCC (on Benjamin Pickett street at Broadway in front of the BIG sign for Port Harbor Marine). Walk to Bug Light Park via Greenbelt Shoreway or Madison Street.
