South Side Roller Derby is Houston's only banked track roller derby league. South Side Roller Derby consists of 4 competitive teams: Missfits, Biohazard Babes, Cut Throat Cupcakes, and the Maidens of Malice; SSRD also includes 2 non competitive skating teams in training, the Darkside, and the Pushy Kats.
Our trainers at South Side Roller Derby have been transforming girls who can barely stand-up on skates into amazing derby players since 2006 with our Roller Derby Boot Camp program (RDBC).
RDBC provides new skaters with the skills necessary to be drafted to a team and to excel at this sport. Below is a summary of what to expect from each of our boot camp levels.
Step 1: RDBC 1 (4 weeks/ 4 classes)
RDBC 1 consists of four Monday night classes. In these four classes, you will learn the basic building blocks of roller derby: how to skate like a derby player, stops, falls, and how to make light contact.
Step 2: RDBC 1.2 (about 4 weeks)
Upon completion of RDBC 1, you will learn and begin practicing the "Skills Test", which includes speed skating, lateral drills, jumps and more contact drills.
Step 3: RDBC 2 (about 4 weeks)
After completion of RDBC 1.2, in RDBC 2 you will continue to practice passing your "Skills Test" and you will begin to learn how to PLAY ROLLER DERBY!!! In addition to doing derby drills, once you pass the "Skills Test" in RDBC 2, you will join our advanced group!
Advanced Level
You are ready to be drafted to an advanced team and will continue training at the advanced level.
