Spartanburg Art Museum

About

SAM is a regional museum promoting contemporary visual arts by inspiring and engaging people of all ages through exhibitions and education.

Description

The Spartanburg Arts and Crafts Council was founded in 1907 by two local artists, Josephine Sibley Couper and Margaret Law. They chose as their motto,

"Art must not be the occupation of a few, ministering to the luxury of a few; it must be a luxury for all."

Although the Arts and Crafts Council grew and evolved over the years, eventually becoming the Spartanburg Art Museum in 1968, its dedication to the spirit of that phrase never wavered. Now, over one hundred and ten years later, the Spartanburg Art Museum resides in a 3,000 square foot space located in the Chapman Cultural Center. SAM's exhibition calendar boasts a diverse range of contemporary exhibitions and offers a wide variety of educational and community programs for all ages and demographics.

SAM is funded in part by The Arts Partnership of Greater Spartanburg and its donors, the County and City of Spartanburg, and the South Carolina Arts Commission which receives support from The National Endowment for the Arts.

A perfect place to explore arts, science, culture and humanities...the museum is Free and open to the public. It is adjacent to Barnett Park and provides a respite from the hustle and bustle of Downtown Spartanburg.
Nice small museum, really enjoy seeing the works from local artists
Drove a long way to see the current exhibit on Saturday when it was supposed to be open but no one could tell me why the door to the exhibit was locked. Never got an answer. Hesitate to drive that far again. Always enjoy visiting but this experience will make me think twice about visiting again. Very disappointed.Visited onWeekendWait time1 hr+Reservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
Small yet worthwhile of a visit.
Spartanburg Art Museum and The Chapman Center have been in my daughter’s life for many years. The classes and art events are wonderful. The instructors and staff are very professional, kind, and encouraging. My family is thankful to have a place where art is still valued.
Very clean. Wonderful art work. It's great that they include work from Elementary, Middle, and High School children.
This was a fun find. There were a few interactive pieces. If you have kids, there was an area for them to participate as well.
A wonderful resource for Spartanburg
