St. James Cemetery

Description

The Anglican St. James Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Toronto still in operation, being opened in 1844 as the burial ground for St. James Cathedral. The cemetery was opened in July 1844 for the burial of people professing the Anglican faith. At that time most of the city’s population of 18,000 lived south of Queen Street West and the cemetery's present location during that era must have been regarded as being outside city limits. The cemetery was necessary as the burial ground around the cathedral itself, in use since 1797, was out of room.Recognizing the growing trend towards cremation throughout the world, a crematorium was added in 1948. To date over 89,000 interments and 75,000 cremations have taken place at the cemetery. The cemetery itself is home to the Chapel of St. James-the-Less which sites atop a knoll at the highest point in the cemetery. In its vigorous, harmonious composition, this small funeral chapel is a splendid example of Victorian Gothic design. Its sense of strength and spirituality is derived from the subtle contrast of its stone walls, enveloping roofs, and soaring spire. Erected in 1860 and opened in 1861, the chapel was designed by Frederick William Cumberland and Storm, one of Toronto's leading 19th-century architectural firms. It and was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1990.The entrance to the cemetery is located at the intersection of Bloor and Parliament Streets, overlooking the Don River ravine. Just to the west is the St. James Town neighbourhood, which is named after the cemetery.

The oldest cemetery and crematorium in Toronto. History at every corner as you walk through this cemetery. A huge variety of different types of monuments reside here. Right in the heart of the city. Dates back to 1844. Right off of Parliament Street. A great place to visit if you are a history buff photographer, or just want to wander in a quiet serene area.
a great place for meditative strolls just steps away from super busy streets of Toronto not to mention DVP. Lots of history - you will recognise some names like Jarvis family mausoleum. Beautiful tombstones that tell us stories of past Toronto inhabitants. There is a gorgeous chapel right by the main entrance. Despite signs asking dog owners to use leashes, many people consider this place to be a doggie park - once I saw a sizeable husky running around, and many smaller pooches enjoying some leash free walks....It would be nice to see more trees planted there, and some of the older tombstones being restored. There are paved paths and many smaller ones just for walking. I never saw this place crowded, it is less popular than nearby Toronto Necropolis located 10-15 minutes walk away.
We came for the weekend from Ottawa and decided to find a relatives burial place. It was a Sunday and the office was closed. We used the internet to find the location. We searched the area but could not locate my relative. We came the next day when the office was open. We were assisted by Adam. Adam not only showed us where my relative was located on the map but he also escorted us to the grave site which was covered over with grass. Adam then helped us uncover the marker and is going to help us get the area around the marker trimmed. Adam was also very knowledgeable about the cemetery in general and told us some history about it. Thank you Adam you helped make our trip to Toronto very special.
Opened in 1844, this Anglican cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Toronto and is still in operation. It is the burial place for many eminent Toronto residents. Walking through the cemetery is like walking through Toronto's history.
A beautiful place for a walk in the city. The fall colours are especially nice there. Such nice big trees and lots of paths.
So far it’s the most beautiful cemetery I have seen in downtown Toronto !! Has a beautiful church at the Center and a long path way to talk a stroll around even though it’s a cemetery it feels pretty to be around it The summer makes it look so shiny and bright and makes you feel to view the church and be mesmerized to its beauty
One of the most beautiful little chapels in Toronto. Built in 1860 is worth a visit. Unfortunately, it was closed on a Sunday, but it was still worth walking around
St. James Cemetery and Crematorium is part of The Cathedral Church of St. James and is the oldest operating cemetery in Toronto having opened in 1844. The cemetery is home to a beautiful church-like chapel that is a perfect location for funerals and memorial services. The chapel provides seating for 200 people but isn’t so big that a smaller service can’t be held very comfortably. This Anglican cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Toronto and is still in operation. Beautiful areas and very well kept up. The age of burial areas will set you back and make you think. There's thousands of people resting in this cemetery and not at all possible to visit each one in a day. Lovely to walk around and read, study the grave stones and especially some of the very tall and large stones. So today January 25.2021, 177 years later I walked and went around two times trying to take in all the names and dates. Beautiful January day to visit and walk amongst past Toronto area members.
A cemetery full of historical information, tins of beautiful monuments, a. Beautiful walk in a real neat part of Toronto cabbage town
Peaceful cemetery to walk through. Some names you may recognize as there are some notable people interred here.
