St. Michael's Cemetery

Description

St. Michael's Cemetery is a Roman Catholic cemetery in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located just southwest of Yonge Street and St. Clair Avenue. The 10acre cemetery is invisible from the street, being located in the middle of a city block and ringed by homes and stores. It is accessible only through a small alleyway between two stores on Yonge Street. The gates to the cemetery are also usually kept locked.HistoryThe city's oldest surviving Catholic cemetery, it opened in 1855. It replaced St. Paul's Cemetery at Queen and Parliament, which had been filled to capacity by the recent influx of Irish Catholic settlers. Some 29,000 people are buried at St. Michael's. It is the final resting place mostly for working-class Irish Canadians. St. Michael's remained the only Catholic cemetery in Toronto until 1900 when it was near capacity, and the Mount Hope Cemetery was opened. One of the most notable features of the cemetery is the octagonal mortuary vault designed by Joseph Sheard, who later became mayor of Toronto.Notable intermentsSome notable figures are interred there including brewer Eugene O'Keefe and Victoria Cross recipient Denis Dempsey. The cemetery contains the graves of seven Canadian servicemen of World War I, which are registered by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Explored St. Michael’s Cemetery this afternoon. visited some of the beautiful mausoleums & iconic memorials and walked around the massive park. St. Michael’s Cemetery located in Queens, NY, is one of the the most beautiful and oldest religious cemeteries in the New York City Metropolitan Area. It has more than 10 mausoleums , the latest mausoleum development is St. Mary’s Mausoleum. St. Mary’s Mausoleum provides many memorial options : Mausoleum crypts for above-ground burialniches for cremation and beautiful landscaping all year round. it is a nice place to take a stroll, especially for the warm afternoon. The beautiful views ,trees, roles of headstones and majestic monuments give people a very peaceful welcoming feeling.
Coming from Brazil just to take a look at Costello's grave and Astoria, by the way I found this well-cared for cemetery with a beautiful scenery and too much peace. Not a single downside to my visit.
I have my great grandfather's death certificate. It states he's buried at St Michael's. I called and they say he's not there. I know he was buried in 1926 and doesn't have a headstone but they should still know the plot he's in! Update, Rita Gambino is going to assist me!
Most of my family over three generations is buried here. Excellent service. Make sure to ask for Cesar... he is the best!
Quiet, peaceful, and serene. Much history... Notable burials Frank Costello 1891–1973, organized crime consigliere. Joseph N. ... Emile Griffith 1938–2013, professional boxer. Luovi Halling 1867–1928, Medal of Honor recipient. Scott Joplin 1868–1917, composer and pianist. George Low 1847–1912, peacetime Medal of Honor Recipient.
I recently drove from Long Island to St. Michael's Cemetery, one of the oldest cemeteries in Queens, and this mausoleum in New York is nice, quiet, clean, and very nice!
My great grandparents and grand aunt are laid to rest here. I had been searching high and low for them, as they were all immigrants. My grandfather moved to Pennsylvania, which is where I live now and I had only remembered their names and what area of Manhattan they lived in when they came to NY from stories he shared. This establishment not only responded to my email in a timely manner, they confirmed that my family, who I have been searching for, is there, and they also gave me the plot location and information. You have no idea how extremely helpful this was. I cried when I read that email. Aside from my grand aunt who died at 13, and my grandfather who passed in '96, my great grandparents had no other family here close by. They had no one to visit their graves. They laid there alone. I promised my grandfather I would go one day. I was only 13 when he died. Now I am an adult and I can go. I just had to find them first. They're not forgotten now. Thank you.
This was my first visit to St Michaels Cemetery to visit my grandparents and great grandmothers grave. I had to first go to the office to find the location and the gentleman was so sweet and patient mapping out the location as If he had been to this gravesite himself. I located the grave with ease. The cemetery is in excellent condition clean and well kept. I also spoke to Rita on the phone to get additional information about other relatives and she too was patient and so very helpful. I just want to say THANK YOU and keep up the good work. Can’t wait to return.
My wife and I laid her mother's remains in the St. Mary's Mauseloeom on the 2nd floor with her niche facing the sunlight as it streams through the beautiful glass panel. Such a peaceful and wonderful place. May she rest in eternal peace We were very happy with the staff and their attention to detail in addressing all our concerns. Thank you all. JG & CG......3/2022
St. Michael's Cemetery near Grand Central Parkway and Astoria Boulevard in Queens, New York City. 5-star rating . Latest visit - 2021 May 22. We are allowed to use the restroom if wearing Covid face cover. Rating remains at Visited in 2020 Sept. My Dad was laid to rest here at one of the mausoleums on 2020 June 5 and we visited him in September for his 86th birthday . This is a very nice, visually and spacially appropriate, respectable resting place for the dearly departed. The mausoleums are very nice and visually appropriate in appearance. The only issue worth mentioning because of Covid-19 restrictions is that I was almost denied use of their public restroom but the Old Bridge Funeral Home personnel of NJ who were accompanying us for my Dad's burial was able to negotiate the matter on my behalf and I am appreciative of this gesture. That was a bit of an inconvenience and annoyance on the part of the cemetery personnel but because it was handled appropriately, it was NOT a serious issue. This review was posted on 2020 Dec.05.
