LODGING HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT ANNOUNCES
ST. LOUIS-BASED PGAV DESTINATIONS WILL DESIGN
THE ST. LOUIS AQUARIUM AT UNION STATION

New Aquarium will join St. Louis Observation Wheel and Train Park
as Entertainment Destination at Union Station

ST. LOUIS — May 2, 2017 — Today, Lodging Hospitality Management (LHM), owner of St. Louis Union Station, announces that St. Louis-based PGAV Destinations will design the St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station, the next phase of development at the National Historic Landmark train station in downtown St. Louis.

The highly anticipated project is currently in the design phase. Construction is expected to begin in fall 2017 with an anticipated completion in summer 2019. The aquarium’s professional operator will be announced at a later date.

“We’re very excited to have one of the top design firms in the country working with us on this project,” said Bob O’Loughlin, chairman and CEO of Lodging Hospitality Management (LHM). “And the fact that PGAV Destinations is a St. Louis company means that they can appreciate the value of Union Station and its history and importance to the community.

“The reception both locally and nationally to the first phase of our project has been tremendous and we know the opening of the St. Louis Observation Wheel in spring 2019 and the Train Park and St. Louis Aquarium will make Union Station a true destination hotel and entertainment complex,” said O’Loughlin.

The 65,000-square-foot St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station will be located in the former mall area within St. Louis Union Station. The $45 million attraction will feature one-of-a-kind exhibits and tanks with 700,000 gallons of water housing thousands of aquatic species from the rivers and oceans of the world.

PGAV Destinations, located in downtown St. Louis, has been involved in the design of exhibits at many of the nation’s top aquatic attractions, including the Georgia Aquarium, South Carolina Aquarium, Discovery Cove and Sea World. The company — which specializes in designing attractions, exhibits and experiences that enrich lives and create memories for guests — also has designed environments at the Saint Louis Zoo, including Polar Bear Pointe, Sea Lion Sound, Penguin & Puffin Coast, the new Grizzly Ridge opening this fall and a variety of other popular visitor experiences.

“We like to think outside the box, dream big and bring our clients’ hopes and dreams into reality,” said PGAV Destinations’ lead aquarium designer Emily Howard, vice president. “The aquarium will be something unique to our city and Union Station’s spectacular architecture and environment will make this project even more special.”

The St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station will be an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) which holds members to the highest standards in animal care and exhibition. The facility will employ an animal husbandry team of marine biologists and aquarists responsible for the long-term care of the animals in the exhibit as well as overseeing water chemistry, animal nutrition, veterinary care, education, staffing and safety. The attraction will be open 365 days a year from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. One million visitors are expected annually.

School groups will experience an exceptional educational experience and the aquarium will be a major entertainment destination for local and out-of-town visitors. An 8,500-square-foot private event space will feature the attraction’s tanks as a backdrop for weddings, social events and corporate parties.

The St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station will be part of a $100 million family entertainment complex planned for St. Louis Union Station. Other components will include the previously announced St Louis Wheel — a 200-foot-high observation wheel with 30 fully enclosed, climate-controlled and ADA-compliant gondolas that seat up to six adults each. Wheel passengers will take three to four rotations high over the St. Louis skyline during the 10-to-12-minute ride. Located on the south side of the historic train shed, the wheel also will include one VIP experience gondola with a glass floor, no line wait time and an extended ride. The St. Louis Wheel will be a new iconic attraction on the St. Louis skyline and will be operational every day of the year, accommodating an estimated 500,000 visitors annually.

Other phases of the entertainment complex at St. Louis Union Station are underway in an area beneath the historic train shed that will be known as The Train Park. The Train Park will feature food and beverage concessions served out of train cars and shipping containers, the Fire & Light Show at the Lake, the St. Louis Wheel, the Hard Rock Café and Landry’s restaurants, and new retail and family attractions. The first phase of development — the Fire & Light Show at the Lake — opened in November 2016. The show emanates from nine fire pods submerged in the watery pool. Tube lights, hung from trees in the Train Park, and a light show projected onto the ceiling panels of the train shed above the lake, create a display synchronized to music on view every hour on the hour throughout each evening.

A new boardwalk has been added around the train shed lake allowing guests to stroll completely around the water and connect to both the Hard Rock Café and Landry’s restaurants. A cantilevered net lounge will be installed between the restaurants where guests can relax in a hammock-style lounge that hovers above the lake to view the Fire & Light Show. The Train Park and Fire & Light Show are being created by Groundswell Design of Philadelphia.

Enhancements also are continuing at the St. Louis Union Station Hotel which is adding 28 new hotel rooms beneath the clock tower section on the Market Street side of the building’s northeast corner. Construction on the rooms began in January 2017 with completion planned by winter 2017. The hotel currently offers 539 rooms and will increase to 567 rooms when the $6 million project is completed.

The hotel also will add 15,636 square feet of new meeting space by expanding the Midway east to 18th Street. Six new breakout rooms ranging from 1,600 to 2,835 square feet will be added along with another 8,700 square feet of flexible event space created with one of the aquarium’s tanks as a backdrop at the cost of $3.5 million. Construction on the meeting space began in January 2017 with completion planned by July 2017.

Very presently surprised. Wish I would have done it years ago. There is something for everyone. It also keeps going and going. We even went backwards through the exhibit to see the otter feeding. You can feed Turtles, touch all sorts of animals including jelly fish, sharks, rays. The shark exhibit was really cool. We also enjoyed watching the spitting fish. Very interesting. We would recommend doing this with the 6 event pass. It includes the mirror maze, selfie station, the wheel, Carousel, and miniature golf. Be sure to bring your parking ticket in so it can be validated as you leave the aquarium. Have fun.
The exhibits were very nice. Marine Life was not just put in tiny little boxes like some of the larger aquariums. Most of the displays combined several different compatible species so you could see them interact or school depending on the other types that were nearby. The opening simulated "train ride" was pretty cool as the entry into the aquarium. Loved the "living" clock at the entrance. I couldn't remember the entry fee so I just took a wild guess below. I think it was well worth it whatever it was .
Fantastic! We had fun seeing, touching, and learning about several fishes. The light show in the foyer is worth mentioning, and so is the virtual train ride. Take your time walking at a comfortable pace, but do come before 3 on most days, since the last ticket is issued at 3:45 on weekdays. One more thing, I should mention is the different fishes that the guests are allowed to touch. They have rays, anemones, jellyfish, and many more that guests can touch. Please be gentle while touching them. The cost of the ticket is $31.00+ taxes for one adult.
Had a great time on our visit. Took my 6 yr old twins and they absolutely loved it! Definitely a great place to go as a family. The staff all seemed very knowledgeable as well. My kids had questions about certain species and the staff members all had the answer.Visited onWeekendWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedNot sure
I will start off by saying that the price vs. The size of the Aquarium is not really worth it. For 2 adults and 1 child it was $93 and we spent maybe an hour walking around and looking at everything. It is a cool concept, and hopefully they are able to expand! The exhibits were cool and the steam punk vibe was unique. My daughter and nephew had a fun time. The face painting, charactures, and restaurant was fun as well. If they ever add to this aquarium, we will be back!
I had such a lovely experience here at the aquarium! The staff were generally really friendly, especially this one staff member at the stingray pool that introduced me to the animals by name and taught me fun facts about them. It was really cool to see these animals in an environment that they could enjoy, and in such a central place in St Louis. I would definitely go here again!
Loved the STL Aquarium! Fun and interactive experience for children and adults. Location was easy to find, parking was only $5 once validated and entry was roughly $27 per adult. You can buy packages, but we only attended the aquarium. Overall, a good experience. There were restaurant/food options, a gift shop for souvenirs and some fun rides at an additional cost. Not an insane amount of walking once inside and very manageable for all during your visit. Our favorite part was the live interaction with animals. We were able to touch sharks, sting rays, jellyfish and sea creatures. The LED displays were amazing too! I only removed 1 star because I wish there was even more to do. I was shocked when we reached the end and wished we could have kept going! A live sea show would have been nice, but I also understand and respect animals not putting in for a 9-5 job. Will be returning in the future for sure! Price for entry: $27 Ticket type: General Admission - Adult
A nice place for family fun. We spent about 3 hours and it was quite enough. The start of the journey - the train ride - was a big hit for kids!! They also loved touching sting rays and jellyfish. Kids can definitely go again and again and not get bored :Visited onWeekendWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedYesPrice for adult entry$16–20
Very nice displays and setup. Very beautiful. Only let down was how small the actual aquarium is would have figured it be bigger all in all maybe 1 hour or less to see everything. I don't know if it was just while I visited or if like that all the time but the mini golf area was packed and bunched in no real order just a lot of chaosVisited onWeekendWait time10–30 minReservation recommendedYesPrice for adult entry$31+
First time visiting the STL aquarium at Union station was a great time. The displays were well designed and the activities fun. You can touch and interact with live jellyfish, rays, skates, fish, anemones, starfish and urchins! Take a walk underwater in the tunnels and see the creatures as they would be in the ocean. All of it is super fun but I think for kids the most interesting activity would be watching the archer fish feeding. For those who don't know, archer fish come to the surface to feed and shoot streams of water from their mouths and knock off bugs from branches for them to fall in and get eaten. They feed them there with fish food covering a ball on a 4ft long stick. Also, the feeding of the skates is a blast but WARNING! YOU WILL GET SPLASHED BY THE SKATES . If you don't mind getting a little wet, go ahead and try it! My reason for 4 out of 5 stars boils down to money vs amount of things to do. 25.50 per adult ticket and you can walk through the aquarium in 30min and see everything. That plus paying to park actually not bad @ $1 per 20min just makes me wish for more attractions or exhibits. Overall though, it's a beautiful aquarium and I suggest you take a trip there .
