Starved Rock State Park

Description

Starved Rock State Park is a state park in the U.S. state of Illinois, characterized by the many canyons within its 2630acres. Located just southeast of the village of Utica, in Deer Park Township, LaSalle County, Illinois, along the south bank of the Illinois River, the park hosts over two million visitors annually, the most for any Illinois state park. Before European contact, the area was home to Native Americans, particularly the Kaskaskia who lived in the Grand Village of the Illinois across the river. Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette were the first Europeans recorded as exploring the region, and by 1683, the French had established Fort St. Louis on a large sandstone butte overlooking the river, they called Le Rocher (the Rock). Later after the French had moved on, according to a local legend, a group of Native Americans of the Illinois Confederation (also called Illiniwek or Illini) pursued by the Ottawa and Potawatomi fled to the butte in the late 18th century. In the legend, around 1769 the Ottawa and Potawatomi besieged the butte until all of the Illiniwek had starved, and the butte became known as "Starved Rock". The area around The Rock was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960. The park region has been the subject of several archeological studies concerning both native and European settlements, and various other archeological sites associated with the park were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

This is a good park. However, the visitor center and trails nearby can be very busy on weekends. We had to park in overflow parking and hike in. We had much better luck heading east to the other parking lots away from the main area. Huge rock formations and tons of places to explore. My kids loved it but we saw many frustrated parents trying to us a stroller. If you have someone to lift a stroller up and down stairs, it won’t be bad but overall the park is NOT stroller friendly. Beautiful bluff and great photo ops. There are lots of little places where the trail is not clearly my defined and you can go exploring a little. The staff was great and all the facilities were clean. There is nice restaurant and lodge if you need a bite to eat or place to rest.
We visited Starved Rock December 10 2022. We stayed at Getaway which is about 20 min away for the weekend. Overall, our experience at this state park was excellent. The trails are well maintained even in the late fall. We hiked for about 4 miles seeing the river views and the canyon views over about 2.5 hours. It is difficult to navigate a stroller/wheelchair along most of the trails in this state park so I recommend getting information ahead of time if you need accessibility. The features and varied topography were amazing; we will definitely return here again. About half of the hike we took was along a wooden or paved path. There are a lot of stairs, many more than they explain. Be prepared to go up and own more than 9 flights over the course of your hike. We had mild weather at about 40 degrees overcast with little wind. Its a great time of year to hike if you don't mind cold weather!
Tremendous park and trails, amazing campground facility as well five minutes up the road. We hiked four of the trails and loved the clean landscape, variations in altitude, and river and woodland views. Staff are attentive and care greatly for the park. The campground is amazingly clean and quiet. Bathrooms are typical camp baths. A really fun weekend for the family with plenty of fresh air and exercise. Restrooms: They exist! They function. They are park bathrooms... Dog-friendliness: Very dog friendly! We met many dogs today on our hikes. Picnic area: Many places to eat and picnic, including pavilions by the river.
A great place to visit from chicago. It’s around 2hrs away from Chicago. Great escape from city traffic and a chance to enjoy the nature. You can hike, camp r just simply enjoy the nature. There are some great canyons and overlook. Though during this time you will not find water in the canyons. So no waterfalls during this time. But the canyons are great to watch with or without water. Must visit place.
Believe it or not, it hasn’t peaked yet. There are some areas with all the fall colors. I can’t believe this place is free. Note…or warning to get to the really beautiful scenery you must walk up several flights of stairs…like hundreds. Then you can also go super low into the canyons too. It’s beautiful and God’s creation. Fall is an exceptional time to visit. Dog friendly but old doggies prob can’t go far. Keep that in mind. We left our girl at home because she hurt her leg.
Starved Rock State Park is an excellent place to hike. The actual starved rock is a very cool place to look around and it is not a very hard or long path. There are plenty of good hiking paths that go throughout the cliffs and rivers. The restaurant and conference center are a good place to rest and have great views. The restaurant’s food is not exceptional but it is pretty good. The nachos are very good. Starved Rock State Park is a unique state park and one of my favorites.
What a wonderful way to spend your day. The trails are beautifully maintained and you can’t beat the views. We saw so much wildlife birds and watch a barge go through the locks. I’m guessing the birds were all migrating so it was great timing. Nov 23. There’s a lot of stairs FYI.
Peaceful, green and beautiful hikes not too far from Chicago. Clean facilities, ample parking. Mostly easy-moderate hikes. Well maintained trails. The small museum gives a glimpse into the native American history of Illinois, I must read more. Overall a great day trip from Chicago. Restrooms: Clean restrooms in visitors center.
One of illinois best state parks. Easy access from Chicago. Great collection of sandstone canyons, well developed, maintained and marked trails… & bald eagles! Great little towns nearby that make the most of being near a great state park but not overdone and too touristy. Prefer the winter hike to capture ice waterfalls, less crowded by far compared to summer and a relaxed experience!
Wonderful place, we have been seeing signs for this place for years and finally got to come and see it. The ice was just melting and it was a little muddy but man what a great place. Good walk ways great views of waterfalls and a historic place. This place has it all. Even the girl in gift shop was helpful.
