Steamboat Powdercats

About

Steamboat Powdercats offers backcountry snowcat skiing and riding trips on Buffalo Pass in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

Description

Colorado is one of North America's premier skiing and snowboarding destinations. At the pinnacle of these experiences in a snowcat skiing trip with one of the 10+ operations that exist in the state. Epic terrain, abundant snow and a fully guided experience makes snowcat skiing a bucket list adventure for most skiers and riders.

Steamboat Powdercats was founded in 1983 near the friendly resort town in northern Colorado of Steamboat Springs. Buffalo Pass is just 20-min north of Steamboat Springs and is annually one of Colorado's deepest snowpacks. The Steamboat Ski Area and its trademark Champagne Powder is nearby. Every year guests from all over the country and the world make Steamboat and Steamboat Powdercats a fantastic ski and snowboarding destination visit.

What sets a trip to Steamboat Powdercats apart from the other snowcat operations in Colorado and North America? We are blessed with powder first and foremost. Typically, Buffalo Pass holds one of Colorado's deepest snowpacks thus providing our guests with dependable fresh snow even during times of drought. Secondly, the terrain on Buffalo Pass is a mixed variety of open glades, meadows and glades interspersed with world class aspen and fir forests. All of the terrain is below tree line which allows us a respite from the wind which can destroy the powder like conditions. There are north, south, east and west facing terrain aspects that allows us the opportunity to search out and find good, fresh snow even when Mother Nature isn't looking out for us.

Beyond all that, we have enough terrain to satisfy a 3 snowcat operation. This gives us the daily opportunity to take an Intermediate, Advanced or Expert (Level I, II, III) tour out most everyday. By pre separating guests during the reservation process, we pride ourselves on getting the 12 guests in the snowcat matched with others that fit their ability level and terrain that they can skiing at a safe level.

Our trips are all inclusive. Not only do we guarantee 8 runs per day but we provide 3 guides per cat with 2 guides on the snow with each group. All the gear is provided including powder skis and snowboards, poles, beacon, shovel and probe. We provide shuttle to and from lodging, a light breakfast, lunch, water and snacks in the cat and an apres ski party and finally we have a photographer on the snow with you who will capture the moment and we provide you with low resolution, social media images for free (high res images cost a nominal fee).

Dates fill up quick. We start booking trips in August and we have a very loyal clientele who come back every year so advanced reservations are most of the time highly recommended. We have an online booking system on our website at www.steamboatpowdercats.com/reserve/.

Mission

It is our mission to create adventure experiences for our guests that are fun, exciting, and safely led by knowledgeable, friendly and professional guides, and to create a work environment that allows us to satisfy and challenge the best and brightest employees.

Products

Buffalo Pass, our permitted terrain is a 10,000 acre winter wonderland perfect for a backcountry snowcat skiing operator. With an annual snowfall of 500+ inches per year, Mother Nature is our best friend. Dry, cold days allow for Champagne Powder and fresh tracks even days after a storm.

Our all inclusive, full day tours include Armada powder ski's and Never Summer snowboards, all avalanche equipment (BCA), poles, light breakfast, full catered lunch (Steamboat Meat and Seafood and Backcountry Provisions), snacks and water, a post trip party and a disk full of images of you and your crew during your trip.

First time CAT skiing. This place is amazing and vast! Plenty for everyone. Guides are on point and know the terrain very well. We did the C level tour and enjoyed expert steep powder trees all day! I would highly recommend this tour! CATs were comfortable. The employees were all very professional and seemed very experienced. We had a blast and will be back! Highly recommend!
Luc with Powdercats took me and two of my kids on an AWESOME mountain biking tour. He was so patient and encouraging. We started at a BMX track to learn the basics and then tried some easier trails. We built up some confidence and then did some longer runs. If you are interested in a guided mountain biking experience, I highly recommend Luc and Steamboat Powdercats.
We were in steamboat for my daughters soccer tournament this summer and my 10 year old son Sean really wanted to go mountain biking so we booked Luc to go with Sean on a tour . He had the best experience with Luc , he picked him up at the bike rental and they headed off from there for a day of mountain biking adventures! Sean said it was the best day of his life ! Sean described Luc as cool , fun , super nice and patient. What more can a mom ask for ! Thank you Luc .
Had an epic day mountain biking in Steamboat with Luc! While I’ve biked a lot, I’m new to mountain biking so I opted for a private tour with Luc and am so glad I did. I learned a ton and had a blast on the mountain! Will be joining Luc again with friends soon!
Steamboat Powdercats is a must-do! I took their tour on New Years Day with my two sons and it was incredible. We got in a dozen runs, all on untracked powder. The guides, photographer, cooks, drivers, and everyone else involved were total pros and super friendly. Can't recommend it enough!
The greatest skiing experience you will ever have. We had the opportunity to go in late December and it was absolutely awesome. Matt House, Taylor, and Caroline were absolutely awesome guides, very professional, kind, and of course great skiers. Our photographer, Oscar, was also very nice. He took some fantastic photos for us and was great to talk to in the cat. We were able to get 14 runs in which was great. The accommodations were also great. We were picked up at our hotel and brought to their office, then we were immediately met with great service from many different employees. We were provided with very nice armada skis and poles and then shown to a nice selection of food and drinks to prepare for our day. Our lunch was absolutely fantastic, and a great energy boost for the rest of the day. The snowcat was also very nice inside. Overall, extremely accommodating, kind, and professional. Hoping to go back again soon.
These guys are the best! Our group had such a good day with them, the crew was extremely friendly, safe and helpful. And a wonderful lunch midday as a cherry on top. Will definitely be using them again in the future.
I booked a ride with Luc S…. Solid guide. He was patient I was an hour late …typical Masshole, explained improvement techniques without lecturing, and was very in-tuned to my conditioning I’m 50+ yr old man-boy, but I’m also half-a-gimp after a stroke a few years back. He also took care of my rental setup saving us a bunch of time….. put me on $6k Yeti which was cathartic. I was hoping to do a solid 4 hours of riding but cramped up like a rookie after 3 hours. Luc still found some suitable flows to make sure I had fun. Getting old sucks… but having a guide who’s in tune with your situation and conditioning made the day a lot better.
We experienced Steamboat Powdercats for the first time last week and it did not disappoint! Everything was so efficient - from arriving and being fitted for their powder gear - to transport and enjoying the powder. Our guides, Brittany, Todd, and Greg, knew the area really well and kept us all safe. We had an epic day! We hope to be repeat customers in the future.
Absolute amazing skiing or riding experience with top notch service. They take you up to Buffalo Pass in certain spots you can see the Steamboat gondola off in the distance and besides the 12 person cats you get all the snow to yourselves. The guides read the groups well and find great runs to fit the groups mood and skills. A great place to come back to year after year!
