The cabins are fairly well maintained. Since I've been here before I know what to expect. No running water except for the upper path rooms where there is a sink and a flush toilet well maintained. The lower path room near where I was at cabin 4, The furthest cabin away from the others, Has an outhouse pit toilet which let's just say is very rustic with rusty bolts and hinges etc. But it all works just fine, didn't bother me a bit. Because its a lingering winter right nowThe weather hasn't turned to generate insects and it's quite windy. For a non-insulated cabin that translates to draftyBecause there is no weather stripping around the doors or windows. Just overpack for sleeping comfort with extra pads because that plywood platform that you sleep on doesn't get any softer at midnight if you're on a thinsulite pad. And the woodburning stove is in the socializing eating area with a dividing wall between the sleeping area so you will not get warmth from the stove at night. I also noticed the trail down to the beach has become more difficult to access. I went when there was a projected 0 tide hoping to be able to get out onto an extended beach but the surf was high and there was no way that was gonna happen. Be mindful of tide and surf reports if you plan to do any beach combing. Due to the steepness of trails I would not recommend bringing small children Unless you plan on carrying them in a pack.
Lovely cabins with a great view. Not much to do around and the beach is very rocky. If you want a nice beach go to Stinson Beach for supplies and come back to a serine cabin. Bathrooms are good but a bit of a walk from the cabin. Water access close by. Otherwise it's just a wood cabin with a fireplace. Perfect getaway from it all Rooms: Bare bones, bring all you need to sleep. Mattress, blankets, pillows, etc. It really is just a cabin. Walkability: Quite steep around. The beach is difficult to walk on, but an adventure for experienced hikers.
Amazing place. Steep Ravine is a great place to visit when you're in Northern California. Very quiet with a beach nearby, it's a perfect place to relax and see beautiful scenery. An interesting point is that Dorothea Lange lived in the cabin, during this period she took incredible photos of her family.
It was really hard to get a reservation ! I had one 6 months ago and we were back from the camping yesterday. I stayed the cabin #4. The view of this cabin was wonderful by the rocks and wave. I felt like in the fairy tale, because the scenes were beautiful and nostalgic. BUT ! The fairy tale turned to nightmare because of the mice. We didn’t have an idea of this problem, so we could not sleep all night.. I think this place should need some tools or methods for mice.. I kept my foods in a bag but the mice tried to go in to my bag and tore it.. This camping was so special experience and the view was like heaven but we will not be here again because of the mice.Maybe the campsite is better for this problem than cabin.
I used to come here all the time as a child even though it was practically in my back yard, and we had a blast! My brother's and I would go on hikes and explore and we didn't miss our Game Boys one bit! This was a time before smartphones were a thing so I can't necessarily speak for kids today or whether not they would enjoy being off the grid or having temporary detachment of their feeds. My brothers and I came back as a memorial for our mother since we had so many happy memories staying in the cabins. While the cabins have had some updates over the years it was still as rustically cozy as I remember, and nothing comes close to beating the views you have from your cabin. Since your primary source of heat is a wood burning stove I'm not sure I would recommend the cabins for very young children. However if your kids or anyone else in your family love hiking, camping, nature, or if you remembered to pack the Jiffy Pop and fixings for s'mores, it truly is a memorable experience for most ages. Steep Ravine is such a treasure to the Marin County coastline. **YOU NEED RESERVATIONS to get a cabin** So plan your trip accordingly. You definitely do not want to miss out on an opportunity to stay at Steep Ravine, it is worth it.
We stayed in camp site #5. Great views of SF. There's no shade at this site - so I'd bring a pop-up tent for shade. The raccoons are fierce at night - so definitely bring things to secure your coolers & camp boxes. Critter Storage was available, but too small for our coolers/boxes. A couple of bungee cords did the trick. Walk is about 5 mins from the car to the site. Wheelbarrows are available for use. I'd suggest if you have things on wheels or backpacks to minimize the # of trips. Cabins are hard to get, though half empty while we were there. Seems to be a lot of last minute cancelations - so if you're a last minute booker, try calling just after noon to see if you can snag a spot. Running water available near the outhouses & cabins. Flush toilets are up by the parking lot. Trash & recycling services available via bins near restrooms. Wood is $10 a bundle. Bring exact change. Parking permit is located in the critter boxes at your campsite. There was a grate on our camp fire ring. Picnic tables at each site. Steep Ravine Beach: hike down one of the paths in between the cabins to get down there. Look up about the hot/warm springs down there. We just missed them because of the tide change. Other sites: 1 & 6 have the most direct view of Stinson Beach. #6 is tiny. Probably not good for multiple multi person tents. Neither 1 or 6 have shade. 2 & 3 would be good for a combined larger group if purchased together. They face out towards the ocean and are big spots with shade. #4 probably has the most privacy + shade, but a bit longer hike in than the rest. Faces the ocean and depending where you sit in the site can see some SF views as well.
My favorite place to see sunset in four different seasons! I camp there. I also stay at cabin as long as I can get a reservation. Even with wind, fog, or rain, I still love this place…. Wild animals… sea, sand, & sun…. Just beautiful…!!!
Been here numerous times over the past maybe 2.5-ish decades. Im now 32 and first started coming here around age 9/10/11 can't remember exactly and first stayed in #10. I have since stayed AT LEAST a handful of times maybe closer to 6ish but don't remember exact amount of times. Anyways it's a very special place for me and was very healing to come back after my mom unexpectedly passed and also to be able to bring my 4 yr old for his first "camping" experience. I've only stayed in the cabins in the first row closest to the ocean so I consider myself very lucky for that. I've stayed in all 4 in front row at least once so #7,8,9 & 10. 7 and 10 only have 2 cabins on 2 sides vs others mostly 5 have a cabin surrounding each side. This year Feb 2022 is by far the GREENEST and only time I've ever seen the entire hillside around cabins covered in lush green grass as anyone from previous years knows it used to be just dirt/dead grass and not anything like you can see in photos I posted. Anywho it's great for anyone who's lucky and fast enough to snag a spot. The campground seems nice but have never stayed there but it's easier to book and is only $25/night compared to pricey cabins at $100/night. It gets super duper cold here especially at night being it's location so BE PREPARED EVEN IN SPRING/SUMMER! Wood is avaliable in parking lot for $10 a bundle CASH ONLY, and unless you bring some it completely nesscary for warmth. You will need to bring some curtains, blankets, sheets, towels ect to hang on little clips they provide around the windows for privacy...it would be rather awkward/awful to not have curtains up IMO. Obviously you need some lanterns, candles flameless prob best if not ones with holders and/or flashlights or headlamps for when it's dark cos it gets DARK as there is NO MEANS of any electricity at all on entire camp grounds including host. Lots of wildlife and deer in the EARLY AM. Saw a dead whale on rocky point beach near campground when I was a kid. Overall this place is a slice of heaven but not all may agree but nonetheless so beautiful. I would suggest a cabin not so close to others if bringing children or if your party of 5 is going to be loud. Quiet hours btwn 10pm & 6am. Cabin #5 is almost directly behind I think #9. 6 isn't as close but a bit behind #7. Unfortunately the cabins furthest way from others are the most popular but might be something to keep in mind if you have loud kids/toddlers/babies. Def must keep eyes on kids almost 24/7 as inside oven can get super hot to the touch and it's right next to picnic table. Also there are also of huge boulders and rocks to climb over/on to get down to beach but I saw a family with 3-4 toddlers and maybe a 5 yr old go down there and didn't seem to be super hard for them. Can't think of much else to say or point out just giving tips I think would be helpful for anyone going there. Definitely wouldn't suggest going if your baby/toddlers are screamers and not sure if they will be able to or do fully sleep thru the quiet hours. As my 4 yr old started running around and making noise early but thank God it was right around 6 but I still felt bad. Anyways be prepared for any situation and don't bring more than 1 car down leave others across the road from the gate near entrance to steep ravine trail! Which looks amazing but is supposedly crowded but leads to another trail that leads all the way to Stinson!
This is the Steep Ravine overlook. This is a great place to Boondock for a night or two. Just be aware that it is an angle so you will need to make sure that you are level if you're going to sleep here. PS if there's already a car here give them space!
Absolutely gorgeous, magical place. Beautiful and serene. I found that no chore felt like a chore. Washing dishes? No problem as you scrub and look out onto the Pacific. Restroom run up the hill or packing and unpacking the car? Great! Striking canyon views walking up and the powerful pacific walking back down. Dozens upon dozens of pelicans flying overhead. The sound of waves crashing upon the shores. We went into Stinson for dinner on the two evenings we stayed but next time will likely meal prep for ALL meals so we can fully immerse ourselves into the biorhythms of the place while avoiding the crowds at Stinson. A few things that would make a stay even better: curtains we used towels and sheets as improvised curtains, a nice table cloth, candles rather than a harsh LED lamp, extra kindling or duraflame logs to get fires going with ease, and perhaps an extra cooler to store food as there was a very cute but persistent mouse in cabin 8 that went after anything left out we ended up hanging food bags off the chains coming down from the ceilings intended for lamps. The cabins, or for the very hardy the campsites, at Steep Ravine are a great public treasure and while I am tempted to be greedy and not share this advice I feel compelled to encourage the public to make the effort to partake of this amazing experience even if just once!
