The University Student Legal Service provides legal representation and legal advice to eligible students on the Twin Cities campus. USLS operates as a department of the Office for Student Affairs and is governed by its own Board of Directors.
Founded by students at the University of Minnesota in 1976, Student Legal Service (SLS) provides legal representation and legal advice to eligible students on the Twin Cities campus. SLS operates as a department of the Office for Student Affairs and is governed by its own Board of Directors.
The SLS legal staff members are professionals experienced in the areas of law important to students and sensitive to the special needs of student clients. The staff consists of a director, six staff attorneys, two paralegals, law clerks, and support staff.
SLS is funded fully by the Student Services Fee and its services are provided to students for free or at low-cost.
* To help students deal with legal problems by giving advice and providing representation.

* Landlord-Tenant law: security deposits, evictions, repairs, lease and sub-lease interpretation
* Consumer law: automobile purchases and repairs, credit problems, warranty questions, contracts, student loans, identity theft
* Collection law: collection of judgments
* Wills & Trusts: preparation of simple wills and trusts, health care directives
* Immigration law: immigration counseling, change and adjustment of status, immigration petitions, naturalization, asylum case evaluation, representation and referrals
* Criminal defense: defense for misdemeanor criminal, misdemeanor and aggravated traffic matters, expungements
* Miscellaneous matters: name change, notary public, document verification, power of attorney
