Submarine Force Library and Museum

Description

The United States Navy Submarine Force Library and Museum, located on the Thames River near Groton, Connecticut, United States, is the only submarine museum managed exclusively by the Naval History & Heritage Command division of the U.S. Navy, which makes it a repository for many special submarine items of national significance, including.Visitors may take a 30-minute self-guided audio tour of the submarine. In a 2009 visit to the museum, a writer for Connecticut magazine found several veterans of the U.S. submarine force who talked about their experiences while visiting the Nautilus.HistoryEstablished in 1955, the museum was originally operated by the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics and was known solely as the Submarine Library. In 1964, it was donated to the U.S. Navy and moved to its current location along the Thames next to Naval Submarine Base New London. It received its official title in 1969. Hoping to convince the U.S. Navy to donate the Nautilus to the museum, in 1984 the "Connecticut Nautilus Committee" was formed to raise funds for an improved museum. A new, 14000sqft facility was built with funding from the state, individuals and businesses, opening in 1986. In late 1997 the Committee decided to start planning and raising funds for a 13465sqft addition to the museum building. Fundraising started the next year, and construction project ran from 1998 to early 2000. The new addition was officially opened to the public on April 28, 2000 "in conjunction with the Centennial Celebration of the United States Submarine Force", according to the museum.

What a super fun place! For a free museum, we sure had a fantastic experience! The museum has a scavenger hunt which kept the grown ups and kids occupied for over an hour! There are some outdoor exhibits when you first get on the property, then indoor, and you'll walk outside to the submarine. There's also a gift shop. Suggested $10 donation for entry, but it is still free. I 100% recommend!

Museum dedicated to the US Navy's submarine service, and the first nuclear powered submarine, the USS Nautilus is located off post, just south of the Groton Submarine Base. The museum is open to the public Wednesday through Monday, and there is no charge for attendance. Those interested in history, technology, and military affairs may appreciate the museum most. The museum is located on the Themes River about ten minutes from I-95.
Stopped by today while heading home to NJ from Newport. First time visiting. Lucked out and got to see a Virginia class sub being towed into the river heading out to sea. Lots of good history inside the museum. Touring through the Nautilus was also great.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitPrice for adult entryFree
Fantastic small museum. Free. Small building, about 2 hours to see the highlights. More of your into details. Movie inside included. Outdoor the main event, the Nautilus, first nuclear submarine. There is only one first, and this is it. No lines, no crowds, for inside the sub is maybe 30 minutes. Fascinating look at inside of this machine of war. Better if you've been inside a WWII submarine USS Pampanito in San Francisco, contrast size and comfort. Very interesting. The parking lot is close, big. Some outdoor exhibits. WCs inside clean and big. Great place to visit if you're in the area. Of course, it helps if you love navy war stories and history.
There is a wealth of history here! Just waiting for you to come explore it!! It's a great place to come learn about submarines and naval history. Several interactive exhibits not including the worlds first nuclear powered submarine, USS Nautilus!! Definitely recommend stopping by if you're into nerdy Navy things Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
