The Suffolk County Department of Health Services has the following responsibilities:
The Commissioner of Health Services is: required by New York State Public Health Law and the Suffolk County Charter to oversee all health services operations, assess health needs and issues, set public health priorities, and prepares the Community Health Assessment;
The department delivers the following services:
- -programs to eliminate health disparities
among racial and ethnic minorities in Suffolk County;
-- public health protection and disease prevention programs;
-- comprehensive programs to protect and preserve the natural resources of Suffolk County and protect county residents against adverse environmental factors;
-- treatment for individuals with mental illness, mental retardation/developmental disabilities, and chemical dependency;
-- early intervention, pre-school education, and programs for children with special needs;
-- health education programs, tobacco cessation classes, and falls prevention programs for the elderly:
-- community-based projects promoting nutrition, physical activity and wellness; and
-- oversight for the county's emergency medical response system.
