Summit Lake Park

Description

Summit Lake Park is a park located along Mount Evans Scenic Byway about 64 miles (100 km) west of Denver, Colorado. The park is 160 acres (0.65 km²) in size and contains alpine tundra. Land to the east of the lake is in a state of permafrost which helps to prevent drainage of the area. During the summer, the park is filled with wildflowers, some of which have not been found anywhere else outside of the Arctic Circle. The park is named after Summit Lake, the headwaters of Bear Creek.Summit LakeSummit Lake is a tarn which sits at 12,836 feet (3,912 m) altitude in a glacial cirque on the north face of Mount Evans and the east face of Mount Spalding. To the north, there is a col (12,855 feet/3918 m altitude) looking down into the chain of two cirques holding the Chicago Lakes at the headwaters of Chicago Creek. By one count that includes several unnamed lakes, Summit Lake is the 13th highest lake in the United States. In 1915, the USGS reported that Summit Lake was the highest lake in Colorado, at 12,740 feet. Later secondary sources occasionally report it as the highest lake in the United States. The land was acquired by Denver in 1924 and incorporated into the Denver Mountain Parks system. It was declared a National Natural Landmark in April, 1965.

You cannot drive up to MT Evans past labor day! You can only make a reservation for the Lake itself. You can climb the ridge and we tried but had to do too many scrambles so we came back down. The views were gorgeous though looking out. I do encourage people to climb the MT Evans trail at least until you get to the mail box up there or whatever it was. You pass these two like windows into the valley that are pretty. I'm not sure how to call them. I have a photo of what I mean attached. It is really pretty up here and there are mountain creatures all over the place! So keep an eye out for them. Heads upr reservations are $12 dollars. I do wish the trail to mount Evens was better marked that is the only thing I would wish for this place. Restrooms: Really nice bathrooms!
A glacier fed lake right below the summit of Mt. Evans, very beautiful and scenic. There is lots of wildlife to watch and wildflowers to enjoy. Not to mention the fickle mountain weather and cold winds, so be prepared accordingly.
Awesome place, loved it.. it started snowing when I reached the parking lot.. this is one of the best and must visit..there is an entrance fee and reservation is needed..there is no to less cell phone coverage so recommendation is to book in advance.. it's also on higher altitude so come prepared with layers of clothes..roads are narrow and on a foggy or Snow or rainy day viability is very less.. Restrooms: There is a restroom in the parking area..
Summit Lake Park is absolutely stunning. You can go as far as you want and no matter the distance will be met with gorgeous views. The drive to Summit Lake Park can be windy and have quite the turns. Take your time and just enjoy the views. If there are turn-offs I recommend using them to take a moment to snap beautiful photos. This place is dog friendly but please be respectful of the wildlife. This is their home and we are just visitors. Restrooms: Restrooms at beginning of trailhead. Very clean! Dog-friendliness: Dog friendly area as long as dogs kept on leash 6-feet or less
Stunning views. We hiked the ridge to the right of the lake and the views down into the valley nearly blew me away. Air does get a bit thin up there so hiking in general was harder.
Went off-season for the first time. Top of Blue Sky was closed - stop of here. 60 mph winds! It was crazy! Beautiful area though - will have to come back someday during regular season
A fabulous place to take sunset and Milky Way photos... plenty of parking... the road gets very rough the last 1/4 mile to the lake so be careful Restrooms: Clean and sanitary pit latrines
I got luck and there was extra passes to allow me to enter the park. Amazing views once you get there.
Amazing lake. I did the mount Evans trail from there and it was something else! Awesome views, the whole loop is about 7.5 miles.
Amazing views!! The only issue is that the road coming up is in need of some repairs. Saw some mountain goats while stopping for pictures.
