I came here today to get food for my family because we have almost nothing until payday in a couple days. Instead of being met with what I thought would be kind people. I was instead unable to even find parking because the older lady I tried to ask if there were any other parking didn't seem very interested in helping me. Don't worry about us being back and I certainly hope others are getting better response from you guys.
The volunteers at the Sumner Community Food Bank are friendly and welcoming. The food bank itself is rather small, the selection is sometimes sparse due to many people needing help with food. They do have fresh produce, milk and butter. Lots of bread items to choose from. Come early as they can often be a waiting line outside.
I was treated terribly. I was apparently the last of two families to get food before 1:00 and was confronted by a very angry and confrontational man raising his voice and pointing his finger saying how they closed at 1 and I need to hurry up. I tried to assure him we just got in there but he was obviously angry. We had waited over an hour to get in, and were only two choices from being done. Perhaps he needed a break? Not a good feeling when reaching out for help. Unfortunate.
Helping people to supplement their food needs. My friend volunteers there on Fridays. So I asked her about the Sumner Food Bank. She invited me to come and see. Everyone I met was super supportive, and helpful. Non- judgemental about any ones needs. A blessing to all who go. But limitations to usage my be on the horizon. Pierce County residences will have first come first serve basis, every other week. Others may be once a month. Disclaimer: It's not official as of yet. PCM
Dang wish kindness would flow better. Man dressed as woman needs to stop being unequal in the treatment of others. We all just need equality and kindness.
Great place to give a little time volunteering. Come on in and give it a try. I was hooked after only one shift!
Make sure your there at 9 to get a beeper .... Because they open at 10 and you will stand in line for just a beeper then and wait for 2 hours ... Show up even earlier than 9 if you don't mind the wait... Really good food for a food bank though... Very friendly atmosphere!
As a volunteer, I’m told by many guests that this location offers one of the best community food bank shopping experiences around. You get to pick your food rather than being handed a mystery box, for example. The volunteers are great people who are happy to be there, and I cannot recommend this place enough to both people who could benefit from this resource and to people looking for a way to give back.
I would give 5 stars however, they seem to be quite racist here. They definitely will give priority to anyone that does not speak English. They also have strict rules about households and how many people from each household can get help from the food bank. 1 person from each household every 2 weeks. Unless you do not speak English then you can fill as many carts as you want apparently. I was there when 2 different times a group of people the woman, her nanny & her grown daughter were told they can only have 1 cart. I know they were from the same household cause they told me they were they just ignored the workers and proceeded to fill 2 full carts and another handheld basket. When I approached one of the workers to say, "those people are still filling 3 baskets of stuff, maybe someone needs to tell them again. Maybe they didn't understand" I was then told by that worker I could no longer bring my service dog into the facility anymore. He told me this and I carefully watched as he said absolutely nothing to the 3 cart family. They filled up the 3 carts and proceeded up to the counter and was aloud to leave without issue. Good thing he singled me out about my service dog though huh? And I have watched numerous people bring in their little dogs on different occasions and the same employee stops and pets the dogs. Maybe he just didn't like that I "tattle tailed". I think it's amazing what the foodbank does. However, the person who runs it/owns it needs to make sure the volunteers are enforcing the rules fairly & consistently between everyone. I do not like the fact the volunteers are definitely more sympathetic and caringbtowards people whom can't speak English and I've seen it numerous times while I've been there. Maybe the volunteers just seem to think it's easier to let others break the rules rather than trying to keep saying something to someone who doesn't understand. I can understand why the volunteers do this, it's so frustrating to have someone get angry or short with you when they don't understand what you're saying. However, I think they need to enforce the rules respectively and evenly between all people
