Sweet Basil's Cafe

Description

When my wife and I opened this restaurant in 1996, we hoped to create a place where families and friends could come, enjoy themselves, and eat well.

Here at Sweet Basil's Cafe, we take great pride in what we create. Our coffee is Certified Fair Trade and Organic. Our dairy is hormone-free and farm-fresh natural. Our produce is fresh, never frozen, and our meats are 100% hormone-free. We offer vegetarian options for our breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner menus.

Sweet Basil's is also available to service your catering needs. We do off-site catering as well as on-site private parties at the restuarant. We specialize in bridal showers, baby showers, and other private parties at our West Orange, NJ location.

It’s worth the drive! Delicious breakfast! Gluten free bread, eggs Benedict and side salad were excellent! Shout out to our very sweet server Michelle who was very conscientious, thoughtful, and lovely. Made the entire experience even more enjoyable! Go early they fill up fast! Parking: Go early the parking spaces fill up fast! Or get to-go if too busy call ahead on weekends to check in advance if there is a wait line
Heard great things about this place, and I was not disappointed. The food was excellent, and the service was exceptional today, 8/21/23. I had a crab cake salad with a fried egg for lunch. Will add it to my brunch list.Food: 5/5
My bf picked this spot for brunch before our movie date on a Sunday afternoon. It was such a beautiful day out too which means BRUNCH to me, ha! Sweet Basil's Cafe is a BYOB, first come, first served café and grill and does not accept reservations. When seated, we noticed it was fairly warm inside and it wasn't that hot out either. It started to be uncomfortably hot so I just whipped out the fan in my purse; saves the day every time! I started off with a fresh lemonade which was refreshing along with my entrée, which was the veggie omelet paired with home fries. I love potatoes in every form so their home fries hit the spot! The veggie omelet was overloaded with spinach, mushrooms, onions and feta. Had to take majority of it out to enjoy but it wasn't bad! My bf ordered the wild berry pancakes which were a 1000/10!! SO GOOD! I kept picking at his plate lol! Definitely would come back here and I would FOR SURE order the wild berry pancakes!
*this added note is for the owner: I am not arguing that it's not vegan, but more that I would not even closely consider that Challah bread. Vegan Texas Toast and Challah bread are two very different things and what you served was neither. I updated my review to make it clear. My recent return to Sweet Basil's Cafe, hoping for a better dining experience, left me just as disappointed as before. Regrettably, I won't be giving this establishment another chance. My review specifically focuses on their vegan options. During my initial visit, I opted for the vegan Sweet Basil's Grilled Cheese. Immediately, it became apparent that the sandwich was not served on vegan challah bread, contrary to what was advertised. I thought it WAS VEGAN, but definitely NOT considered CHALLAH BREAD OR TEXAS TOAST. My friends, who happen to be Jewish, confirmed this discrepancy. When I raised the issue with our server, she went to the kitchen and returned claiming that it was indeed challah bread. While I didn't feel the need to argue further, it was evident that the bread did not meet the criteria for vegan challah. This misrepresentation left me disheartened. Additionally, the presence of wilted lettuce on my plate was unappetizing. Although the sandwich itself was passable, the saving grace was the delightful fig aioli. However, considering the overall underwhelming experience, the steep price of $15.95 felt unjustified. During my second visit, I tried their Sizzling Breakfast Frittata. While the home fries and toast were satisfactory, the frittata itself was inedible due to excessive saltiness. The $16.50 price tag felt unjustified for a dish that lacked any real flavor. The service was also subpar, with inattentive and unfriendly staff. Sweet Basil's Cafe should reconsider their vegan options, aiming for both quality and affordability.
2 people for brunch on a Monday ordering the specials cheaper than menu total came to $55. Food was no to par, it was a basic diner food with a higher price tag. Service was lacking. Server came by once for the order and once with the bill after having to ask for her. Kitchen was slow. Atmosphere was loud and cramped. Oatmeal cookie smoothie was really PB and banana, not the best for $9. Brie and pear grilled cheese was Brie with rine still on and one large tomato skip it. Biscuits and gravy was just pork no sausage. Warning!! Vegan options are NOT cooked on a seperate grill! They cook all French fries and home fry options in same oil as the meat. They could not provide a space for non cross contamination. Would not come back. Came for dinner once previously and has the same service and food issues. Vegetarian options: Not cooked in its own kitchen. Foods made in same oil and grill as meat products.. AVOID Parking: Small lot in a strip mall roughly 15 spots.
The portions are very small. But filing I enjoyed mine! My significant other felt his portion was very little , he also ordered a side of sausage links for $6 & got three of them ? Toast slices were probably toddler size but other than this…. The food and service were absolutely amazing and the food was just so delicious! I really love the Vegan options !! Great place and really nice atmosphere.
My partner got the eggs Benedict and I got the chicken and waffles. I usually love coming to this place because they have unique menu items for brunch, a seasonal menu, and often times very affordable for what you get. Great value. I got two huge pieces of fried chicken the size of my face, so I ended up having enough leftovers for another meal. The only reason I knocked off a star was because our waiter ignored us. We had to ask twice if we could get our water refilled. On top of that, we waited over 30 min for our check and a box after we were done with our food. I asked if another staff if they could assist, and they said of course, but 10 min later, still nothing. I ended up finding and flagging our initial waiter, and it still took more time but at least we got things moving at that point. I know it’s a busy Sunday morning, but I did feel like it was a huge wait. I guess you get what you pay for, even in terms of service.
The restaurant was full today which is an amazing sign - very courteous staff. We didn’t like our seats since space was too tight and the manager placed us in much better space. Love going to Sweet Basil.
Absolutely blown away. My service was amazing despite them being busy and as for taste, there was nothing lacking. I had the chicken, bacon and avocado sandwich and the whiskey R&B pancakes. Prices were definitely affordable. Food portions were large and could have fed two people honestly so I barely touched my plates. But yes, definitely recommend and will be back for more!
I was going to make it less stars but is many good things. Good were Burger was great and the Spicy sandwich. Very bad the cappuccino the fact that they don’t have brown sugar and the fries were horrible. Also the service they forgot to bring a soon to move the sugar ,also forgot our utensils and took too long to take our order. The place was empty.
