One of West Michigan’s premier family owned jewelers since 1949.
Swierenga Jewelers was established in 1949 by Barney Swierenga on Wealthy St. in Grand Rapids. In 1950 Mr. Swierenga hired a dedicated young watchmaker named Tunis Vanderlugt, and shortly thereafter moved the store to the new "suburban" Alger Heights shopping center in southeast Grand Rapids.
Mr. Vanderlugt honored the founder by keeping the original store name when he bought the business in 1965, and with his wife, Lois, earned a loyal clientele from all over West Michigan.
In 1981, their oldest son, Tom, who'd been involved in the business since childhood, earning credentials in Gemology and Goldsmithing, bought Swierenga Jewelers from his father. Under Tom and his wife, Deb, the business has continued to prosper, outgrowing the Alger Heights location.
In 1999 Swierenga Jewelers moved to its current location in the beautiful Caledonia D&W Village Center where the customer centered traditions of over six decades continues.
