Syracuse Municipal Airport

Description

Syracuse Municipal Airport was an airport located in Camillus, NY.OriginsThe first plane landed at the site of the airport in 1912 and was flown by Harry Atwood, establishing a long distance flight record from Chicago, Il to Camillus. The airport expanded over the next few years and by 1925 became known as the Amboy Airport.Municipal AirportBy 1926, Syracuse Mayor Charles Hanna felt that the city needed an airport to enhance its economic future. The city scouted a number of small airports in the area, including Bethka Field (near the intersection of Thompson Rd. and James St. in the city proper) and Nedrow Field in nearby Nedrow, NY. The city finally decided upon the Amboy Airport and purchased it from Camillus for $50,000. After its official opening in 1927, Mayor Hanna put the airfield under the direction of the City Parks Department. After being purchased by the city, the airport gained popularity. The first airmail was delivered in 1929. In the following years before World War II, the airport featured appearances by many world-famous pilots including Charles Lindbergh and his Spirit of St. Louis airplane in 1927, Will Rogers and Wiley Post in 1931, General Jimmy Doolittle in 1932, Amelia Earhart in 1936, Douglas “Wrong Way” Corrigan in 1938; as well as celebrities Kate Smith and Lowell Thomas.

Such an organized airport. So, myself and biggie missed our flight to Texas and we had to reschedule- 2 layovers. The American Airline attendants were amazing and courteous.
Fun little airport, lots of places to shop and grab some souvenirs. However, the people at the place where they confirm your plane ticket were very rude. They were rolling their eyes and acted like they did not want to be there. Nonetheless, the airport was pretty cute and rather small.
Fast and easy airport. Easy to get in and out. Easy to get to the baggage claim. TSA is pretty easy, no complaints
Excellent airport. Quick check in. The food is nothing special but you can find something. Everyone is super friendly.
I had a 639PM flight booked with Frontier at this airport. I book with a third party for work travel and regardless of having my confirmation number via text, email and on the app I was told that I had no flight. Prior to arriving at the airport, i took my prescribed sleeping medication, like I always do, in order to sleep on my flight after my work day. The woman working at the Frontier gate accused me of being intoxicated. I had had nothing to drink, because I do not drink anymore, and I had worked 8AM-4PM and drove from Ithaca to Syracuse to catch this flight. She specifically told me I needed to drink water and sit down and when I asked why she told me it was because I was intoxicated. I replied that I wasn’t, extremely confused. She then said I had to be on something and I told her I had taken my sleeping medication prior to arriving at the airport in order to sleep on the plane. When they told me there was nothing they could do for me regarding my 639PM flight I replied that I would go to the United counter to try and catch their 6:58PM flight. No one was at the counter so I went back through security upon showing them my flight confirmation via email. I then tried to book Frontier’s 8:30 PM flight but the page wouldn’t load and I ended up falling asleep 2-3 tomes due to my medication. When i went back up to the counter around 8:15PM asking the other woman at the counter to book it for me she thought I asked if she booked the flight for me, instead of asking if she could. Then both women called security on me and I was removed from the gate area. I told the officer what happened and he was very understanding and showed me where I could sleep. He also later checked on me and asked if I was able to book a flight for the next morning. I did book a flight with another airline for the next morning at 6:15AM. Needless to say, I will never fly with Frontier ever again and these women should be fired for accusing me of being drunk or on drugs. Many people take prescribed medication before flights to sleep or reduce anxiety. This is not uncommon. And there is nothing wrong with doing so as long as it’s prescribed to you by a doctor and you can prove it. The officer even asked why I didn't know my medication to the women and I replied that I was never asked and offered to show him. He replied that he didn’t beed to see it. These women should be fired for their actions.
Rented car from Budget. No wait renting or returning. Price reasonable. There was no traffic at all, but there were several police SUVs parked across from the front of the airport to discourage anyone from parking or loitering in the drop off/pick up lanes, so my ride dropped me off and parked in the cell phone lot to wait to make sure the rental went smoothly. The traffic signs do a good job of showing which lanes to use to get to where you're going.
Nice quaint little airport. Not overly busy. United staff turned the plane quick!
I have to go through extra security checks due to not having an ID and TSA was very kind to me. They do not violate you with pat downs, even if it is a more invasive pat down. They are quick even with the extra screening. The man who checked my backpack, cane, and shoes was super kind and made friendly conversation. Amber at the American Airlines check-in was awesome. Our boarding passes would not print correctly and although it must have been a frustrating situation for her, she was totally chill, friendly, and very helpful. And she had a beautiful smile! There are tons of shops here. The architecture is interesting and there are really neat aviation displays. Any employee I interacted with was kind. I would fly into Syracuse Hancock International Airport anytime.
Very slow airport. Even with TSA you have to wait for a long period of time. The airport is clean have all the required stuff.
I appreciate the new arrivals waiting area for people picking up passengers. It was well marked by signage and easy to understand. Dropping travelers off remains easy. I haven't flown anywhere since before the pandemic shut everything down, but I'm sure I will eventually. Regardless, I recommend Syracuse to friends coming into town.
