About

A Family Tradition since 1968

Description

When you ask Jim Tadych why he has been in the supermarket business for over 45 years, he will tell you it is because he loves people. Being able to fill the needs of his customers has been his passion from the beginning. That mind set has carried Jim from his first store in Brillion WI in July of 1968, to the newest acquisition of his store in Clintonville, WI.
It should come as no surprise Jim Tadych took to the grocery business.
His father, Victor, got into it as a teenager in the 1920’s and left school early for his first meat market job. That job led Victor to open Fairview Market in Manitowoc, WI: a small general store & market where Jim started packing potatoes when he was grade school age. He would work before and after school, that is when he and his brother Jerry were not throwing rotten potatoes at each other!
In the early 1960's, Jim took time away from his father’s family business to serve his country in the Army. Upon his return, he got married & started his family. Jim realized his father’s store could not adequately support the many family members now involved.
So, in the mid 60’s he began to search for a store to buy. The search proved difficult until 1968 when he found a small “mom & pop” grocery store in Brillion, WI. It was a turn of the century blacksmith shop converted into a grocery store with less than 700 square feet of space. For decades it was known as Doughty’s Grocery, although Keenway name remained on the building. You can find a picture of this store prominently displayed in every Tadych’s Econofoods.
Original owner, Francis Doughty had passed away and his wife Freida was ready to sell. However, she hadn’t realized Jim was a potential buyer. She thought he was applying for a job. She told him “we’re not hiring anymore.”
Ultimately, Freida sold the store to Jim. Both Victor and Freida helped finance the deal and further supported Jim by not calling in their loans during the early years.
The store served as a modest beginning for Jim. He, his wife Pat and their three kids lived above the store. In his first days of self employ, Jim asked himself more than once what he had gotten into.
Forty five years after T&C Market first opened its doors, Jim Tadych knows the answer to the question he asked himself in 1968. “I have gotten into, not only a business or career, but a way of life. A blessed life filled with many challenges. But those challenges are offset by the many great friends, employees & customers I get to work with every day.”

Wonderful floral dept! Ordered 100 roses for a celebration of life. Doing this cross country from AZ, I was a bit nervous. Such a nice surprise! They were/ are beautiful and have lasted for over a week! Well worth the cost. Thank you to everyone in the floral dept!
I'm working on the island so I can't pick out my own bagels. I'm wondering did a worker find this in the trash cause I just received this on Tuesday. We are almost in mid July. Someone should be fired. These bagels aren't only plain but also disgusting. This is a reoccurring issue. I can't go to the store myself to pick my items. Getting groceries used to be exciting, now it's disappointing. Maybe on my off season I will apply, cause it seems like y'all need some employees. But seriously if y'all want to refund me or send new bagels or fire that employee that would be lovely. Thanks
This review is of the FLORAL Department for wedding flowers: Tadych's Houghton did an amazing job putting together the florals for my wedding! Kelsey, the floral manager was so easy to work with. We did an initial meeting over the phone where we discussed what I was looking for. I then sent her some photos of ideas and my color scheme. She put together a lengthy and professional powerpoint presentation with different options and how plausible they would be ie what is in season, what more affordable at that time of year and what she thought would go well together. She then checked in with me periodically about options as what is available really can change quickly. We set a budget initially and she was able to keep everything that I requested within the budget. She also did a great job of managing my budget expectations by giving me good estimates of what different sizes and flower kinds would cost. She was also very easy to get ahold of via email, phone or visiting the store to discuss my florals. The finished products were lovely and fit so perfectly with my color scheme! I would recommend this floral department for weddings as they are easy to work with and really deliver. Thank you Kelsey!
Great place for fresh groceries. The produce is always fresh and they have a wide selection of all types of items. Prices are affordable and they often have good sales, but they can be busy at peak times. The staff is friendly and helpful and the store is always clean.
Picked up items for a short week in Copper Harbor. They had all that we needed plus much more! Nice, friendly staff; great bakery!
We enjoy the doughnuts here. They also have some specialty groceries you can’t find at Walmart.
Great beer selection from Michigan and beyond. Variety of Vollwerth & Baroni products along with other Michigan brands. Clean, well stocked, friendly helpful staff.
I have lived all over and, for me, Econo is the best grocery store there is.
I seriously love coming in after a late shift. Dan & Justin are my favorite employees! They are always so kind & helpful! Keep up the great work! These guys need raises. Dan runs to work everyday and Justin walks! They are some of the most dedicated employees I have ever met in my life. You are lucky to have them! Also thanks for the great selection of specialty groceries and vegetarian choices! I appreciate your whole team and the effort you put into carrying amazing produce!
Heather is a great store manager and the overall vibe is like family. Products are typical supermarket stuff. . .but the fresh fried chicken from the deli is on point. Exceptional beers like most U.P. outlets. I spend a lot of time at the car wash. We call it Pats!
