Founded in 1931, Tantaquidgeon Museum is the oldest Native American owned and operated museum in the United States. Tours are conducted by Mohegan tribal members. The museum is operated by the Mohegan Tribe. Mohegan and other woodland Indian artifacts are featured along with items from the Southwest and Plains.
The nearby Mohegan Church was founded in 1831 through land donated by two Mohegans, Cynthia Hoscott and Lucy Teecomwas, and the fundraising efforts of a Non-Indian missionary named Sarah Huntington. The church has served as the tribe’s school, ceremonial hub, political center, and house of worship. It stands as a symbol of cultural cooperation and survival. Congregationalist Services open to the public.
